Definitely an improvement over a type 1 beetle transmission but I'd check with www.car-parts.com for an 094 Vanagon from a '84-91 VW. They have a much bigger reverse, get you the strength of a six rib and are pretty new compared to a 3 or 5 rib. Usually they can be found for $300-500.

My 2 cents. You'll need a linkage to shift the side linkage but they are around and can be fabricated as well.
