Post subject:  torson set up
iam putting # 28 torison rods in a packrat frame and was wondering if anyone knows a good starting # to set them up. would like to try to get them right the first time. it will be an ac motor and 2 x 3 arms other than that no real added weight. thanks for any help.

Have you ever used a torsion adjuster? My torsion has one in it. I loved it. Set the adjuster all the way down and install the springs. Then you just turn them to desired tension. The only problem I see with them is the bolts point down, so they could drag. The way I handled that was to collect some differant length bolts. That way I would always have the bolt up tight to the adjuster and they weren't hanging down. Put in a long bolt and you can have a very tight spring and all the ground clearance. A little shorter bolt and you have a soft working suspension for climbing or higher speeds. Also a tight suspension allows you to haul more weight. Larger coolers = more beer!

everytime i have put torsion bar in i went a little tighter than i should because they will settle if u ride alot

I agree with Dean all the way, putting on the torsion adjusters was the best thing I done to my frame, it gives me more adjustment than just taking it all the was apart to move it a few splines, I highly recommended putting on the adjusters when building a new frame, if already done (with seats, belly pan, shifter linkage, etc....) remove them and install one, make sure you install them at a 30 degree angle (make sure it is not too much because it will hit the shifter rod) so the bolts will not hang down as bad, you won't regret it, it will be time well spent. I used 28 mm torsion bars when I did my honda install, the motor weighs approx. 170 lbs. more than a vw, I put the spring plates in the stock position and it was pretty stiff for awhile but it's starting to soften up...
