What is everyone using for wire? I have .035 right now using 75% / 25% gas. Im thinking about going to .030 wire when i run out of this.

What size welder are you using? The 75/25 is the best gas to go with for most mig welding on mild steel and chromoly! The wire goes hand and hand with the size welder ----most don't have the larger amp welders [200 and up],run .030 and up. The smaller amp welders that usually run 110 volts run .022-.035 wire ----they don't have the amps to melt the wire and hold a constant duty cycle for the larger wires.

I have the Lincoln SP175 and I started out with .025 that I found to be too small for anything thicker than .040". I went to .030 wire and it works on anything a throw it at. Now keep in mind I am a novice so my thoughts on this really mean squat lol.

I have used them all.. I also have a sp 175 Lincoln and I have ran 100 rolls through it. Main thing imo, is to keep a felt "wiper" on the wire. Anyway, I like .023(.025) or .030 the best. I can weld thicker stuff (buggy frame no problem) with the .023...
The 110 volt welders are very limited and have to be run at full output to weld a buggy frame and with a 30 amp breaker.

I have a millermatic 250 so power is no problem it will run .045 dual shield if i want. I used to be a certified welder / fabricator and have used everything from .030 to 1/16th dual shield as well as tig and stick which i have 3 certs. in. I was just wondering what everyone was using for buggy frames. I have drive wheels and tips for .030 and .035 so switching over is not problem. Just not sure what I want to use on a new frame. and also I didn't find anything on welders or wire sizes on here so I figure its a thread we can compile info that someone may find on down the road.

All the race shops here use the same set up as mentioned above on mild and chrome ---75/25 w/ .030 !!!

I agree....it is the best setup to use the .030 wire and 75/25 gas mixture on a 110V welder, but I use a .035 wire on my 240V Lincoln 250 Mig welder.

Mine is 240V also. I am going to need wire soon so I figured now would be a good time to change. Never had any trouble with .035 but I have always liked .030 better for some reason. In the shop i used to work at we had machines set up for .030 solid core, .035 solid core, .035 dual shield, .045 dual shield, and 1/16th dual shield. Most of my work was done in the field with 7018 stick on 1/4" or better material and most of the shop work i did was with the 1/16th dual shield. Neither is practical for a buggy frame.

Yeah, I agree... it has a "finer" bead control, imo.
