Post subject:  rack & pinion ?
appaltree has several racks ,8" through14",the discription doesnt help.are they talkin about the stroke?which 1 would be best for a king pin axle? and last, where can i get info on how to set 1 up? Paralel with tie rods?how far off the axle plane? stuff like that.rode a buggy with a rack once, & hated it, it was set up wrong somehow ,when it was turned all the way to the right or left the tie rods would some how pass their center & lock .you would then have to get out & kick the tires back the other way to get it back to work again.i woul appreciate any knowledge on this subject since i need a new box & it seems like i can get a rack & pinion for about the same price.if im gonna do this i wanna do it right the first time.. thanks guys.

Saco seems to be the one to get if you can swing it. If you use the Latest Rage, or "offroad", rack and pinion you can grind the stops to get a tighter turn out of them. I would recommend going 1.5:1 ratio at least. The 1:1 ratio has got to be super twitchy. For setting one up correctly search every site you can for "bump steer" and you will find a months worth of research. It all amounts to finding the sweet spot for the rack that allows the wheels to cycle through the suspension without effecting the steering. It can take some trial and error to find just the right spot, but when you do it allows you to drive the car without the wheel ripping out of your hands so bad. Add a hydraulic ram assist and you'll really love it. With Saco you get the option of International tie rod ends or heim joints.

The tie rods locked because the rack wasnt far enough forward, the tie rods need too run toward the back of the buggy to the spindle so that they are never parallel with the rack otherwise it will flip the wheel. I run a 99 grand am rack 2 yrs no problems.

thats it, i remember now. his rack & tie rods were parallel with the axle beam.

If you are running in the woods you dont want any of the ones you are taking about they are tiny and weak. I had the same idea until i saw one.

This is a Saco Magnum rack. This and the Howe racks are the best.

been running the hd off road rack on king pin for 5 years now.. when i first got it i had to replace the bottom plate bolts and lic tite them...took out the bumpstop bolt and all has been well....even ran some huge 775 3 ribs for couple years and it shows no wear.....one 360 degree turn of steering wheel gets you from lock to lock... i run the international tie rod ends on inside and sleeved stock vws on outers for easy change weak link
