Did a search to find some pics of rear airbag setups and found a few but was wanting some showing exactly where they had them mounted on trailing arms and where top mounting point is. I'm sure mounting locations vary a little depending on buggy but just want to get a good look at how a properly functioning set should look. Reason is cause I broke torsion bar last year and parked it after failing to get the broken remainder of torsion bar out and tried to remove other side so I could knock the broken one out but it's stuck also. So instead of coil over route I'm gonna go airbags. I know I could find another torsion housing fairly cheap and weld it in place but all I hear is good things on airbags and by my calculations is the cheapest route. Thanks guys |

how far down the trailing arm does airbag need to be mounted? I may have to relocate shock mounts because they're right in the middle of arm and doesnt look like theres much room for airbags as it is now. I'll post some pics of just how much room I've got here shortly. Maybe if I had some 2x3 or 3x3 arms it would help |

2x3's are almost a must , mine is cramped fir space with them pm me Ur cell number an i can send a bunch of pictures of mine , or if u have Facebook I have them on there also , really you wanna go as far down the arm as possible. I had to get fancy with my upper mount . Have pics of that also |

thanks for the pics jrod, props on a nice setup BTW. I'm gonna have to get pretty creative on my top airbag mounts as well... Will be worth it in long run though! |

my # is 270-670-5327 , I'd greatly appreciate all the pics I can get to get idea on mounting. Ordered bags & brackets today so theres no turning back now!  Jayrod how far is your top mount from the trailing arm as it sits now? and Why the change on top mount? What kind of air pressure do you run? Oh and wheres best place to get schrader valves at?

Mad Mike had a good write up that I copied a few years ago on installing air bags. Maybe it will help you. I think he has done a lot of them. You should check out his build. Here's what I copied. All thanks should go to Mike for sharing this info. So we are all clear, nothing but a shrader valve is needed on the bag to fill it up. If you desire to fancy it up, all good. The bags should be isolated from each other so they work independently. This is the bag I installed on JIm's car and the "free" set goes on my SS2. #3800 Double Convolute Air Spring Diameter 8.50" Closed 2.8" Extended 12.50" 5,000lbs per bag 400psi rated $89 Simple rules to follow on installation, Use largest bag you can fit into the suspension. Bigger the bag the less air it takes to maintain your ride height and the softer the ride. If for some reason you install too big of a bag it can be made smaller by adding antifreeze into the bag. Adding liquid reduces the volume of the bag raising the spring rate. Should you install too small of a bag it can be made larger, to an extent, by adding a tank to each bag increasing it's volume which decreases the spring rate. With the arms, cv's and axles in place raise the arms to max cv angle, and with the bag almost collapsed you now have an idea on where the top of the bag needs to live. The best result would be that in that max up posisition the bag should be directly on top of the arm. The bags are very forgiving. They can be mounted where the top and bottom plates can be as far as 2" off center from each other and as much as 30 deg out of alignment. As long as they are protected from abrasion, they won't break. I have only seen 1 air bag explode on a tractor trailer. It was a 15 year old bag on a heavy haul trailer that had 120,000 lbs on deck. And it did go bang, big time. Differance for us is it had 120 psi in it, ours will only have 40 or 50 psi so no problems. Using the hinge set up on the arm makes the bag and arm work togeather so sweet, no gross bag mis- alignment anywhere in the travel. The bag should be mounted on the arm about 1/3 the way down, or further, from the inboard pivot. With the arm as far down as the cv angle will allow, inflate the bag and see where it will fit, the parts will show you where they need to live. |

Mine aremaybe 6 " from pivot, but my frame narrows where the bag needed to be , so thats y it'd so close I run about 55-60. Dropping my upper mount should squish the bag more, but im goin to 930 setup so I need the extra length from things |

thanks for all the help guys,I've looked and researched bout bags so much in past 2 weeks debating on going this route I'm ready to get em on! spent past few days workin on buggy fixin odds and ends and swapping the old tired motor for the new one I've been putting off all year. got it fired up today and so far sounds pretty healthy. What options do I have bout the drivers side torsion that's still functional? Problem is the inside splines are froze up on both the broken pass side torsion bar and drivers side "in tact" torsion bar. Cut part of center section out to try and free them up? Hopefully one of the last few questions I'll have on this subject!! lol |

Have you tried beating the good one thru the center of the torsion. You can jack up one side and add a little diesel or blaster to free it up. You could heat up the center, but if the trans is in I would;t advise it. |

Still haven't put my rear skid plate on or fabbed new shock mounts but I'm lovin this TORSIONLESS already!! Thanks for all the info guys, the explanation and pics yall sent made it possible!!

yeah I used a 7 in diameter bag and they fit on my stock trailing arms. now I've gotta problem with buggy not shutting off with the key off. it starts and runs fine but when you turn key off it continues to run. I'm running electronic dist with external regulated generator. can't find wiring diagram for pointless setup. possible grounding problem? |

Mike helped me out on my bags on my old car . I set suspension at normal ride height and set the 3800 bag at 10 inchs which if I remember gave me 4 plus inchs of droop . With a suby in back I only ran 45 psi in the bags . If I ran 5o the car would not hook good . The bigger air diameter you have the better . Also i mounted the bags In a 12 degree angle . Bags are bad ass ! Good luck ! |
