i have been working to install a sweet rack and pinion with power assists.i am doing this for two reason the first is that i have broken 2 vw gear boxes on the last 2 rides and the second is i have all the stuff to finally put my ls motor on my buggy and didnt want to have to worrie about removing the power steering pump and re routing the belt and pulleys.i am gonna try to post pics the progress so far

I will caution you on the mount of the cylinder. I don't think that aluminum lug is going to withstand the force that cylinder is going to deliver. I would suggest adding something into that to make it stronger, way stronger. Those cylinders are known to rip 1 1/2" .095 re-enforced tubing apart, I have installed enough to know better. Also it's real important that the cylinder is parallel to the stroke of the rack looking at it from above and from the side. Any off angle will accelerate the wear in both pieces. |

STOP!! Have you checked the steering direction yet? All the Sweet racks I have ever see or heard of mount in front of spindles so if you mount it behind spindles when you turn right the wheels actually go to the left,,so go out and check that,,,,like Mike said beef up the cyl mounts I just went back and looked at your pics and the pinion is below the rack so your buggy will steer the wrong direction!!!!!!! |

Yep it will steer the wrong way been there done that. Had mine all hooked up and grabed the steering wheel and turned and sad f@@#$&!@&(%";:,?;!&$;!,!"$.

I believe the way the ram is mounted on the rack is in Sweets design. If the rack steers the wrong way then mount it upside down. It will make the steering linkage a little more complicated however it will work. |

The ram will work in either direction, makes no difference. Just switch the out put lines from the servo. When I got my first rack from Saco the rack plate was installed backwards. So I mounted the cylinder the way the rack needed it. Same thing, fired it up and lets just say we were both confused. Switched the lines and all was good. |

I am assumming they are talking about when you turn the steering wheel the Rack arm (not the Ram) moves in the same direction your turning moving the front wheels in the opposite direction. |

Yes the Rack is wrong! the cyl can be plumbed ether way to work but you must 1st have the correct rack |

I don't see any easy solution to fixing this problem.I guess you could change spindle sides and put in front of beam.I'm curious to see the fix here,keep us posted.Chad

i am redoing all of the steering any way so i thought about putting a gear at the end of the column and then placing another shaft right below which would turn the opposite of the gear attatched to the wheel and then plumb the ram backwards.the hardest part would be machining a cover to keep the gears free from debris and slinging grease everywhere.something like a steering quickner unit.all of my steering shaft will me made from 3/4 dom i could get some 3/4 splined shaft and splined gears to build the counter rotation shaft |

An end loaded rack is not the best choise for a trailing arm supension anyways. Adding gears and such is only going to be a mechanical nightmare for such a simple steering application. It will cost way more in the long run. There is a reason we have one of those hanging above the door in the Camp Toilet lol. KISS! |

Typically I would recommend Saco Magum however i am no longer endorsing them because the quality control and customer service sucks. So other than the more expensive Howe Diablo I do not have a recomendation. You could try the Saco however I am sorry to say it will be a crapshoot. |

Eric debord is running a grand am gt rack and it's pretty nice.you can steer it with your pinky finger.I believe that there is a post somewhere on here where someone else used it.I've seen a few guys run escort and mustang also.this is just another route for a power rack.search topics for it you should find the info,if not mistaking I believe it had part numbers for new ones in the thread.Chad

Im with Chad you all need to look at Eric Debords power steering setup its nice. And yeah it will steer different with it mounted like that seen it myself with my buddys buggy i think his rack came off a caverlier |
