Post subject:  power steering question.....

....for anyone running a powered GM (or similar) steering rack.
When you are coasting with the engine off cruising down long downhills, is it REALLY difficult to turn steering wheel (like it is when a car is shut off)?

Our "community two seater" has a Grand Am rack on it, but it is not powered. Works fine but I have a pump and bracket and can get lines made up and was thinking about making it power steering since I got most the junk to do it laying around, but I like to shut motor off on long descents. I am thinking it will not steer any harder when I shut the motor down and coast than it does now withOUT power , but want to hear from someone who knows for sure. Didnt know if having residual pressure in the lines will "load" the rack.

Thanks

Get with Eric Debord on this, he runs the same setup you have with the pump and all and swears it is the best move he did on his buggy, I steered it once when the buggy was parked with the engine off and it was fairly easy......nice stuff

Larry I run the GM BOX not the rack. But if my engine is not running it is very stiff. I just leave it running and put it in nuetral and it does fine.

Thanks Chad.

Nitro, I like to shut off, not idle.
A/C....better to let 'em cool off when ya can. Not really necessary when riding Ol' Blue, but its a habit cuz it IS necessary on mine.

Why not just turn the engine off and leave it in a high gear?

The Cavalier racks work OK with the hydraulic lines in a closed loop, that's what I did when I used that sorta rack ,,don't think they would be much different with pressure cut off . Might be cool to do an electric pump if it did. One main thing might be to modify the pump for better flow if you mismatch parts.

I have two different buggies both with the GrandAm/Cavalier rack (mine and hers). Both these buggies have dual EMPI 44's which don't do well on a steep downhill, hence the "turn off and steer down" routine. I cannot tell much of a difference in the steering after the engine is turned off. At first, there might be a slight resistance as you turn it, but nothing that you will need both hands for. It ain't no problem and will work just fine for ya.

My box has a very long pitman arm(11") for very quick turning. Could be the reason its useless without the pump.
