I read the thread at the top about oil and went back a couple pages look'n for a recomended breakin oil. The post at top listed just one, are there other good ones? Also what is the chemical additive thats need for cars that were designed to run on leaded fuels? Zinc, phosphorus? :? One more. What's the best/correct trans axel gear lube? Thanks, Dave W.

You definitely would want to use Rotella to break-in your engine, usually use the 10w-40 ones, you can get them at Wally World and you will need to use a GOOD filter during that break-in, that way it can help catch anything that it does'nt need to go back into the engine. I prefer to use any good WIX filters from NAPA, when finished, use Castrol GTX oil, mostly you can run 10w-40, but it is up to you. As for the tranny, you would want to use good stuff as well, I would use any NAPA brand, I would NOT use that Coastal junk stuff that you can buy anywhere because they are usually made from recycled gear oil and you do not want to use that kind of stuff, use brand-new stuff, I know they cost more, but why not pay a little more now than a whole lot later??? Lucas also make VERY good oil as well, you should only need 3-4 total quarts.

Most diesel oil manufacturers are reducing the zinc content of their oils.
Zinc will foul the convertors/particulate filters on todays diesel engines.
I still use Lucas 15/40 but add a half bottle of this to the oil intitially and after the first few oil changfes.

Post subject:  Re: Break in oil

Brad Penn Racing oil. Use the Brad Penn breakin oil then the regular Brad Penn. If your going to use oil without ZDDP at least add a bottle of Comp. Cams oil additive. When my Bradd Penn oil distributor ( high dollar V8 engine builder not a salesman.) was out of break in oil he had me add a bottle of Comp Cams additive package to the regular bradd Penn. Rotella no longer has any significant levels of ZDDP in it.
From Engle's on line catolog:
LUBRICATION: Due to new E.P.A. rules, oil companies are no longer putting the same additive packages in off the shelf
engine oils. This makes it necessary to use oil additives to replace the missing ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate)
which contains both Zinc and Phosphorus. With flat tappet camshafts this lubrication is mandatory. Without the ZDDP
there is insufficient lubrication and failure of the cam and lifters is eminent. As part of the Engle Racing Cams Co. warranty,
proof of oil additives is mandatory in any claim filed on flat tappet cams and/or components

Do not run oils 10-30 or 10-40 with the fuel saver star on it.

I've never seen or heard of the Brad Penn brand, nor had 4 out of 5 auto parts places. The one guy at Lordco had heard about it on an auto cross forum but did n't know where to get it. Guess its not available north of the border. I did get the Royal Purple breakin oil and a bottle of Lucas break in additive. Both have ZDDP. I just want to oil up the rings and cylinders for assembly with what will be run in the engine. I was told not to use assembly lube here (ultra slick) as rings won't seat properly. Thanks for the info. Dave W.

American Refining bought the rights to the Kendall OIl formulas, made it in more choices and labled it Brad Penn.

Brad Penn, Comp Cams, Amsoil, Redline,Royal Purple, Lucas, Valvoline MC racing oil, Joe Gibbs all offer oil for flat tappet cam oil or the additive.
Contact speed shops and motorcycle performance shops most carry a couple brands or the additives.

My last case of Brad Penn ran $72.00 including tax. The Comp Cam additive was $12.00.

No. The castrol or wolfs head goes in the motor. He asked abt gear oil as well... if that's what you meant..

Heres another article by someone who spent a lot of time and money testing oil. Note the section about ZDDP requirements vs valve spring pressure.

What does it matter. most of you are just going to paw hills for 10 minutes , shut it down hot , do unnecessary wubows and rev with toy fans, loose belts, wore out pulleys, fan shrouds with gaping holes and missing tin, timing way off, wrong octane, distributors not advancing right, carbureters to lean, too hot of plug and make it pre detonate, and the most common sound in the woods,"Anybody got a quart of oil?".I still hope someone will take 2 fans and weld them together opposing each other. Now that would make a hurricane! Think about it.Dave out!

While your observation is a timeless account of many past and present VW engines worldwide both stock and modified; oil has become just as or more important especially with dual valve springs. LN Engineering has SAE data showing how even a small amount of ZDDP reduction accelerates cam and lifter wear. You have tool steel cam followers in that Passat engine. My air cooled VW also has a set of tool steel cam followers after bad cast iron and the correct oil did my Web cam and Web lifters in in 2000 miles. Tool steel cam followers don't mind that todays oil is ZDDP deficient and they can be reused on another cam. T-1's have flat tappet cams that need the correct cast iron and the correct oil to function. These days both are hard to find. You won't find oil with ZDDP at Wally World. Some times Checker and Auto Zone have Valvoline Motor Cycle Racing Oil which has about 75% of the ZDDP required. Correctly made cast iron? Not from China. Competition Cams had to go back to USA suppliers for cam and lifter blanks and with increasing spring pressures have made even more changes. Engle Cams will not warranty a cam unless you can prove the oil used in the engine has ZDDP in it.
