Post subject:  1500 into a 1641

I have a 1500 single port b block. Everyone I talked to said you can make them into a dual port motor. They also say the b block is very weak and should not build it any bigger than a 1641, because of the oil passages. I already have a set of dual port heads, and intake, and a carb. Is it worth buying the top end kit and changing it over, or am I peeing in the wind.

I plan on building a stroker motor on down the line when I find a good block. Just want something with a little more power than the 1500 for this season.

Yes you can convert it over to dual port and yes it would be worth your time. If you already have the heads, intake and carb. you are well on your way. Buy a set of 87mm pistons and do it. You will need to change out 4 of the head studs, the two middle ones on the top row are shorter for the dual port heads. Other than that you should be good to go. I would also boost the compression ratio up while you are at it. You will need to set this anyway when you install the new top end. Set it around 9 to 1 and you will be happy with it.

What would be a good cam to run with this set up? I want something with alot of low end power. Plus my buggy is small 90 inch wheelbase, and I am running 29 inch tractor tires if that comes into play.

An Engle 100 or 110 will work well with this setup. I had a 1641 once with an Engle 110 with a modified Solex and it ran suprisingly well. Just my 2 cents.

I thought you were just changing the top end?? Ok then, ................ Personally, I would just leave the cam stock. With the bigger pistons and the compression bumped up higher, it will run really sweet with a stock cam. If you insist on installing a cam in it, the choice should be an Engle 100 if you are using stock heads with a single Solex carburetor. If you intend on changing to a better carburetor down the road, you could use an Engle 110. Do not go higher that that though. It will not run as well.
My advice would be not to split the cases and leave the bottom end alone. As long as the crankshaft end play is under 10 thousandths you will be fine. You could slip a new set of rod bearings in it before you install the new top end. That's always a good idea. Save your money for the bigger motor later on down the road.
