Just purchased a type 4 2.0 yesterday, anyone have any input on it, ran rough due to crappy carbs so I'm starting to tear down, wondering about the tins if all are needed or not, and any input on the motor?

Most off road folks do not mess with the type 4 because of the lack of affordable hot rod parts available. The biggest downfall is the exhaust exiting the heads on the bottom. Terrible for good ground clearance. Most off roaders stay with the type 1 because you can build them up so cheap.
Don't get me wrong,,,,,,,,,,the type 4 is a good engine. Better than the type 1. Just not very popular with the woods buggy crowd.

Just wanted to leave it stock with a set of slip in 2034 pistons and juggs, good dual carb setup and shaved flywheel, and can't find a header at all, any suggestions

i dont know anything about your engine, i run a 2.2 suby. i gave 180 for my porcelain coated vw header, that i ran on my vw stroker. i went to a local muffler shop and had them fab a complete header for my suby for 195 plus tax, and they had to start from scratch flanges and all.

Don't know how affordable, but I think Fatt performance has a bunch of type 4 stuff, including off road headers.

Thanks dave that's a great deal for the carbs ill have to get ahold of him for sure this weekend, the cylinder kits r a bit pricey, I found a slip in kit at texas aircooled for around 250 I think I'm going to go with, but of course they are sold out, I also ordered a fatt proformance catalog today so hopefully that helps

its a very nice looking build! i have to ask, have you considered suby or eco for your build :?: could save you lots of $ instead of the type 4

Yup we had our twins 15yrs ago. And it does not get any cheaper as they get older   . The 1.7/1.8 engine uses the 66mm stroke pistons... The 2.0 uses a 71mm stroke pistons. So you have to use the pistons with the right pin height . You cant mix them or you will end up with pistons that are to LOW in the cylinder or they will POP out of the cylinder. You can take a 66mm stroke crank and offset grind it to the 71mm stroke. Or if you have the money offset grind it to a Rabbit rod journal size and use the (71mm) stroke pistons so a 74mm crank with 96mm pistons= 2143. I would look on the http://www.shoptalkforums.com/index.php for the used 1.7/1.8 slip in p/c at the 96mm size. Thanks Dave T

Are you going to stick with the stock cooling? If you want to convert to upright, there is a manual that will explain how to fab the cylinder tin to use a type 1 fan shroud. You can buy the pulley and alternator stand from aircooled technology to use with it. If you are going to go big bore (96mm slip ins) you have a good starting point with the 2 liter block because it already has the 71mm crank to make it a 2054. Also, the 1.8 heads are the best to use if you can get a set of them.

The type 4 exhaust exiting out of the bottom of the heads does not create any ground clearance issues in my opinion. My header does not hang down below the bottom of my block and the exhaust actually helps protect the push rod tubes to some degree. You are limited on your exhaust options. Fat Performance has a very good offroad exhaust if you convert to upright cooling. I think they also make one for stock cooling as does one other manufacturer (I think it is European Motorworks). I have a friend that has an offroad exhaust setup for stock cooling to use with square port heads that he would probably sell....let me know if interested and I'll get you his number so you can deal directly with him. If you want to fab your own, there are certain type 4 exhausts that have an "F" header pipe that would be easy to use to make your own but you'll need the head pipes off of a stock exhaust if you do plan to make or have someone else make your exhaust.

It is definitely worth it in my opinion to change to upright cooling....if you can afford it. The stock fan housing and alternator are very heavy and it will save a lot of weight by converting....plus it looks much better and the fan isn't sucking up all of the dust from behind the buggy.

You can actually get your 94 mm cylinders bored to 96 then just buy the pistons separate (with rings, pins, and clips of course). This guy also has them http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... p?id=50225

Please use this to check the size of you engine. http://www.tunacan.net/t4/reference/case.htm I'm thinking stock 1.8 not 2.0 if so then you must get the right pistons for your engine. Unless the crank has been changed to the smaller diameter journals(50mm) you will need pistons for the 66mm stroke crank. I hate to see you order the wrong parts then not be able to send them back. Joe Cali is the book to get on the upright conversion. Check these parts out. Image , Image , Image , Image . Thanks Dave T

Similar but not the same. Make sure you get all of the bolts out before separating the case. There are a lot more and some are kinda hard to find. In a lot of ways they are easier because the lifters slide in from the outside and you don't have to worry about them until after the case is reassembled. If you're going to the trouble of splitting the case, I'd highly recommend doing a cam swap. It isn't cheap but you wouldn't regret it later....the stock cams suck!!! Also, most stock cams are usually worn pretty bad anyhow. Type 4 motors are known for having cam problems so do your research if you decide to buy one (I'd recommend Webcam or Aircooled Technology).

How much work do you wanna put into this rebuild? You can also drill and tap the oil galleys if you wanna spend the time.

Don't really want to split the case or need to except the fact some water came out the oil when I got it due to sitting if there was a way to clean it without splitting it I would
