like it says what break in oil or just use zink additive? also what do yall use during engine assembly? i used to use stp oil treatment on everything and then just dump in some good ol castrol 20/50 and fire it up, but i havent built any "new-fresh" engines (about 7 years) since they really started screwing with the petrol products  also i have read the post at the top about "what oil in your vw" but it hasnt had a post since NOV 08 and is locked for some reason

You would want to use break-in oil, it is usually 10w-30, it is thinner and already loaded with zinc, it helps gets to the bearings and the flat tappets on the cam lobes and the lifters to break them in a little better and it helps drain out almost like water to where it will take out the residues with it a little better as well, then use what ever oil you want as long as you add zinc additives in it. I use Royal Purple XRP racing 51 20w-50 and it is LOADED with zinc already and it is very high-quality stuff and it does not break-down under high temps as easy too. There are other oils out there that is good stuff too, but you know me, I go for the best. If the price is too much for you on the Royal Purple oil ($15.99 per quart) then I would go for Castrol GTX 20w-50, that will be my next choice. Don't forget to use Lucas brand zinc additive, Lucas makes the best oil additives money can buy. |

i use lucas oil additive as an assembly lube. stuff is thick and sticky as honey! i smear it on anything and everything! then for oil i use rotella t 10w-40. tried running 20-50 once and it blew my oil filter up like a balloon! then gave my driveway a nice oilling. |

Gotta run a good filter. Was it cold out, and did you rev it? Mine did that once. We run 20-50 in all our buggies. Switched to WIX racing filters and hasnt happened again. Using assembly lube on everything and pouring in your preference of oil seems to work just fine from what I've seen. Thats how mine was done. Tore it down recently after three years riding and main and rod bearings looked good enough to re-use. (but I didnt  )

I use Brad Penn Racing oil, they have break in and regular use oil. It is cheap on the east coast about $4 a quart. By the time it gets to AZ it is $6 a quart. Last time I broke in an engine in cold weather I used the Brad Penn 10-40 motorcycle racing oil with a 1/4 bottle Comp Cam ZDDP additive to make it like the ZDDP concentration of Brad Penn break in oil. Valvoline racing oil also has 1200 ppms of ZDDP in it. Brad Penn has 1400 ppms and the breakin Brad Penn has 1700 ppms. In another oil post I put a link to a taxi companys test of ZDDP oil 1400 ppm made their V8 cam and lifters last longer. VW uses one lobe to open two valves so they get double wear compared to most engines. |

Stay away from the Valvoline oils,they are the worst oil known to man IMO, I know for a fact that they break down very easy under high temps especially in a VW air-cooled engine. |

I've always had great luck with Castrol. I put 10w 40 in the buggy. Roy reccommends it so its good enough for me
