Post subject:  what size heads-ideas? have new 92mm heads

I am rebuilding the top end on a stock 1600. I am going to use 87mm pistons, what heads, rockers, etc do you recommend. I have a set of heads i believe to fit 92mm pistons that i inherited from a friend that passed away. Dont know the specs but i know they were expensive when he bought them. They have not been ran or even installed on a motor. I will trade or sell if anyone is interested. New to vw so any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Check the valve sizes and if they are big 40X35 or so yes make the engine a 1835, If they are say 39X32 get some sleeves made for the tops of your cylinders that will slip onto the cylinders and into the heads and run them. Or post up some pics and I have some 043( stock replacements) that I would trade for :) . Thanks Dave T

I would step up and make your engine a 1776 with 90.5 cylinders. The 87's would not fit the heads. You would need to have the case bored to the cylinders size, and i would recommend to have it full flowed at the same time. What ever rockers you go with get some solid shafts.

Measure the valve diameters and post up a picture of the intake port and the intake end of the intakes. Done correctly stock valve size with ported heads is still a healthy set of heads. Even the much maligned 041 head works well with a 1600-1835 and a small cam. A 1776 is the way to go or if where the barrel seats in the head is worn open them up for 94 mm pistons. You may want to cc the heads ahead of time so you can open up the chambers a bit to get your compresion and tight deck.
Like Auslander reccomended step up to full flow and solid rocker shafts. You should inspect the bottom end no sense starting out with worn engine bearings. Use a Scat c25 or VZ 14 style cam and you can stick with the crank you have.
