ok well as the post says i need help hooking up the electrical side of the motor...fun stuff i know and should be easy enough I have the distributer (plug wires) figured out but other than that im a lil green...the car that i had this motor in had a voltage regulator, which looked like a square box and it had 4 terminals on it one from the battery, one to the alt., one to the coil, and another i think to the alt (small wire)... need some help here...do i need that part? thanks... Another Newbie |

Are you using the Voltage Reg? If so, it is probably a generator not an Alternator. If at all possible, I would suggest changing to an Alternator. Other may disagree but I have had lots of issues with Regulators breaking off road. The ones I had do not tolerate Mud and Water very well. Here is a simple drawing for setting up the Generator with a Voltage Regulator..

Ok well the engine that I have in the rail now was in a rat rod that I picked up for $300 and I ran this motor but I didn't know how else to wire it other than the regulator. The alternator that I have is a Bosch and I am sure it is a alternator because it has a small wire and a large wire on top that's it so I figure it has an internal regulator and I would not need the external one. |

Correct.The wire that gets screwed onto the alt. goes to the starter and then to the + side of the battery.The plug in wire goes to a warning light to let you know your belt flew off or the wire got yanked off.You have the good Alternator. |

Excellent. An alternator with an internal regulator will work much better. Here is the wiring for an Alternator.

Yeah I thought I had an alternator and not a generator but what threw me off was the fact that it worked with the regulator and I had no warning or indicator lights for the rat rod so it worried me when someone told me the you had to have a indicator light to let the alternator chargethe battery.... Is that true about the indicator light on the alternator to allow it to charge or not depending on the use of a light? Right now I am just trying to get the motor to crank to set the carbs up and allow the motor to run so it does not seize up |

Yep.. it is true. If you do not have the alternator light hooked up it will not charge. I did not think that was true but I learned very quickly that it does make a difference. |

Cool I will have to get a light then. I am getting the interior welded in this Saturday and iwill post some pics of the progress! What I have going in on Saturday is the steering shaft, steering wheel and support, race seats and belts, peddles, and gas tank. I will "x" the roof and cage after I wait a little while longer aka more money...lol...i have fuel line and filters on the way and residual valves for the brakes too! I'm excited to say the least because it's getting closerto being riding around the yard and right now that is a big step! |
