I was thinking about how I could put disc brakes on the back of my never ending baja project the other night. I have a couple of 914 rotors sitting around and got to thinking if I could make a hub I could easily use them. I had a couple of drums off my bug laying around the shop. I noticed they have a nice pattern on the inside of them for reinforcement where the lug bolts go. I'm not finished with them but I did get them roughed out. I need a rotary table to cut the radius smoothly. Anyway heres some pictures.

My first buggy had a set like that. We made hubs out of drums and used rotors from 911 rear. I also took a set from a jeep and redrilled holes. I dont think I would cut so much off. I left as much material as possible. We used a brake lathe to cut them.

good idea, i knew there was a reason i saved drums....

on another note, some ol bridgeport action huh? i dont have any tooling for mine yet, but a rotary table will definately be one of the first things i buy!

914 Rotors are an excellent choice because of the bolt pattern matching the VW pattern. I usually cut my drums in a brake lathe and leave as much material as possible. This is a very cost effective way to get disc brakes on your VW.
Another rotor that is a good choice is the Nissan. The bolt pattern needs to be re-drilled but the hat height is correct.

I could have done these on a lathe but I wanted to play with the mill. I also wanted to see if I could make them a bit lighter. I've got some 914 fronts I made on a brake lathe. I turned the rotor and hats off of them to make just hubs. This way I can run a vented rotor on my 914 using a hat and rotor from the circle track guys.

As in how it works? A rotor just slide over the hub and is held in place by the lugs like most cars are. I don't know which nissan rotor these guys are talking about as I'm using 914 rotors.
