Post subject:  Transmission Bell housing (Starter ear crack repair) Ideas..

Hi folks, just thought I would ask for some ideas for a crack I have on my transmission... Check the pic’s below. it’s the bottom starter bolt location. the bolt goes in tight and all but you can see the crack. I am looking for a replacement bell housing so if you have one or know of one let me know. But until I do find one I was thinking I may want to reinforce it somehow so it doesn’t break all the way off (who knows, could happen).

My thoughts:
1. Drill two holes from the top of the mount to the bottom of the mount (location would be behind the bolt) and run some safety tie wire (have some good HD SS stuff) through the mount and come around the outside and tie it off.

2. JB Weld - remove the bolt cover it with JB weld and screw it back in, also add some to the crack area.

3. Both 2 and 3

4. Wish I could find a welder... one little spot weld and it would be fixed... (let me know if you are aware of anyone in my area that can do this... I looked but may not be asking the right questions.

Thanks guys

The ONLY good fix is to V grove the crack, screw in a bolt and weld it. Everything else is a band-aid on a broken arm. Where are you from?

I am in southern Indiana near exit 9 on 65 (sellersburg area)... I have been looking for a bell housing but have not found one that was worth the work to replace... I need one with the top mounts (Buss Style) like the pic below... I dont have a welder, and have not found anyone that can do the job.

see this image for the mounts (upper ones is how I have my tranny mounted in the buggy).

thanks guys for trying to help...
