sorry if this is in the wrong forum but didnt know where else would be better... im just wondering why no one ( atleast that i can find ) has built a 4 wheel drive buggy maybe using a 4 wheel drive bus tranny? and im not talking about building a mid engine rock crawler either, just a regular buggy with a front drive axle. |

With a rear engine you wouldnt have enough weight up front to get much traction out of the front wheels. Hard to justify the extra weight and power loss for little traction gain. Needs to be mid engine to get some front traction gain. |

im no expert but i would think adding the axles & equal diameter tires up front would easily be 100/ 150 lbs, on such light vehicles that is a significant amount of weight. and the hp loss could be compensated for fairly easy.. im not new to playing off road, but ive only had my buggy for about a year so i am fairly new to it and ive high centered this thing a couple times already, thinking if it was 4wd it might have pulled itself through |

Picture it like backing a 4wd up a hill, the back tires barely touch. I agree the added weight of the 4wd parts will help some on flat ground, but I doubt they do more then fling dirt at you. The reason for rear engine is that it gets the best traction due to weight transfer to the only drive wheels. Mid engine would also keep the nose down on steep hills better. Just some thoughts of mine, been trying to design one of these myself. I could very well be wrong, it is just all theory at this point. |

yeh nothin like kickin around some theroy.. i'd say your right, mid engine would be better weight transfer but im thinking if i used a 4wd vanagon trans it would keep the build simpler, and by keeping most of the weight in the back the buggy could still 'skip' through mud or something soft that a front heavy vehicle would nose dive into...? |

Not worth the expence and effort to have less than a rear engined rear wheel drive Buggy. Only would need 4 wheel drive on rare ocassion. For those a winch is handy lol. |
