Post subject:  Rear bearing sequence question

I am looking for the complete sequence of all bearings, seals, o-rings, retaining clips, and spacers from one end of the stub axle to the other. This is on a new trailing arm with the IRS carrier. A picture would be great if you have one. I have two bearings (one roller and one ball), one seal, one large o-ring, one small o-ring, one retaining clip, one washer, two small spacers, and one large spacer.
Thanks,
Bryan

edit,,,, some of this info is wrong but left in because it is corrected later

The larger spacer goes on the stub axle first with the flat side going against the stub. The tapered edges on those spacers goes towards the bearing.

Also the stub nuts need to be 275Ft/Lb

The large spacer that goes on first, all the way against the cv flange, needs to be the one that has the chamferred inner edge, the chamfer goes towards the flange, to allow for the radius where the flange meets the axle.

Tapered in or tapered out? If I am not mistaken you each say to install it a different way. When I bought the spacers they said to install the tapered edges on both spacers facing out from center. So which way is it?

They told you right . The inner spacer(closest to where cv bolts on) has a taper on the inside, the outer spacer (closest to the hub) has a taper on the outside circumference. Both tapers face away from the middle of the stub axle.

edit,,,actually both tapers face away from the hub,, flat side toward hub

Then the picture is wrong on the outside one?,,, I always put the outside spacer with the bigger surface to the hub. otherwise the seal does not seal. :?

edit,,,,,the pic is not wrong,,,both spacers have the flat side facing the hub,,the one against the stub is chamfered on the inside to clear the radius on the stub axle

You prolly right about that. But for torquing it all down, it wont matter. But the inside one being installed wrong will sure bind it right up solid. 8)

Hey guys, is a 930 setup the same way? And does it use the same bearings?

Good, I have a slight wiggle in one of my rear wheels. I was just hoping my spare bearings would be the same. Thanks Adam
p.s. those tires I got from you have worked great, just needed to put on beadlocks.

I got most everything together in the front and rear this past weekend. I have one part left over that I did not know where to put it. It is a very thin washer for the rear assembly and it came with the rear seal kit. The I.D. is the same as the spline on the axel.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bryan

I think that shim is used to align the hole for the cotter pin when the torque is set to 275ftlbs,,,only if needed.

hmmm so the angled edge goes towards the CV?

-------| angled going this way > ??

Mine has never been locked up and never came loose I dunno I always put the angle going in towards the bearing.

There is a big radius where shaft meets the drive flange, keeps it from breaking there. The inside champhered spacer cleares that radius making a square sholder for the bearing to seat against. The outside spacer has the external champher that should point towards the nut, that's for the seal to ride up onto whithout going up over a square sholder. Less chance of mucking up the seal.

edit,,,,if you put the outside seal on before the outside spacer,,then the outer spacer will push in taper end first, with the small end against the long inner spacer,,,big side against the hub,,, and you get the best seal

Post subject:  Re: Rear bearing sequence question

Pull the inner seal then snap ring, tap the bearing out. the outer race will come right out and you should be able to pull the bearing out. Hope this helps.

Post subject:  Re: Rear bearing sequence question

Here is my more difficult version,,,You may damage the inner seal,,,just try to pry them out with a small screwdriver or pic., The outer will stay in the cap. After you pull the stub axle out and wipe the grease off and pull the seal out,,the circliip has gotta come out. If you dont have the right circlip pliers,,,I have used a good pointed set of needle nose pliers. Then you can tap the inner bearing out...I use a large socket on an extension,,the outer bearing usually is not too tough. this is from memory and may not be exactly right,,good luck

I have a question about the retainer clip, I purchased a new set of 3x3 arms witha 930 half kit but there is no retainer clip nor do they show one in the picture. Do I still need one if so where can I buy one since they don't list one that I see on their site. I do have a set of old type 1 irs trailing arms if they would work.
