anyone help me out on how to go about cuttin the oil pan on my subie to gain some more ground clearnce thanxs

Steves pan looks real good. Here is what i did. Take the oil pan off and clean it up. Place it upside down on a good flat surface like concrete floor, heavy duty work table, or wifes granite counter top. I stood up a 2x4 on its side to equal 3.5 inches and laid one of those carpenter pencils on it so the lead sticks out the side.This is a way to get an equal mark all the way around the oil pan that is about 3 5/8 inch. Bring the oil pan to the pencil and spin it around until you get a mark all the way around the pan then cut it off with a chop saw or whatever. Then you have to build a bottom from 1/4 flat steel. But before you weld the bottom on you have to alter the oil pickup. I cut mine into and removed some and then welded it back together. With the bottom still off make sure the pickup is about 1/4 lower than the bottom when it is on the upside down motor. It helps to use a motor stand. 8)

I cut mine at 4 inches the same way firebug did it. I cut 2 1/4 inches out of the pic up and leaned it forward about 1/4 inch. I'll post pics of the pan and pickup later. I used 3/16 steel for the floor.

Just remember to put in a drain plug :roll: and cut the new floor bigger than it needs to be, it will leave a shelf to weld to.

thanxs for alll the help guys, i understand the pan part do you have any pics of the pic up

and when you say the pic up should sit lower than the bottom of the pan do you mean

top of motor when upright

what i mean by the "B" is should it be 1/4 inch below so when i bolt the pan on it should push the pic up a little as you tighten the bolts

or "A" when bolted on the pic up should have about 1/4 inch of space between the bottm

when the engine is upside down on the engine stand the pickup should be lower that the cut pan so when you put the bottom on it will clear the bottom.

1/4 in of space between the pickup and the bottom of the pan so oil can get sucked up into the pump. I'll be doing this to mine shortly. I plan on welding a piece of rod across the bottom of the pickup so if it ever gets knocked it won't close off the pickup.
