I was wondering if any woodsbuggy members had a single seater, with a side shift vanagon transaxle? I thought about this combo, but wondered about the shifter linkage, and what I would need to make it work. Any suggestions or pictures would be great. Ethan |

A lot of the KY guys went to this. Same thing as a two seater, you just have to run the u-joints and carriers to make the rod go around the seat like a normal single seater. Look up WildWIllie's last buggy build, his inline had a midshift trans in it, and I'm pretty sure he put up good pics of the linkage he made. |

I am in the process of buying a whole vanagon... I will keep you in mind Afterburnt, but davidk has first shot at any extra vanagon trans that I get. Afterburnt, what is a good vanagon trans worth, and what is a core trans worth, something that you can rebuild? I have to buy the whole van, and don't want to overpay, lol! I also wondered what are the best years to get a trans from, I remember that there are differences? Ethan |

You want a 1983 1/2 and later. The earlier Vanagons are your typical nosecone with the side shift case. The later ones have a true mid shift with better gears especially the reverse setup. I have climbed grades in reverse in my 2800# tank and pulled a buggy backwards up a grade and toasted the clutch and the reverse stayed in tact. Bet ya can not get a testimony like that from a nose cone owner! |

Thanks for the reply Ody. If the van is 1983 1/2 or later, what is the trans worth? |

it all depends on the condition ,what diff is in it ,and what shape the in side is in, there's a few on samba for $300 $450 on up then you pay shipping and your gambling on whats in side.if its got a super diff in it thats worth $350 by it self |
