Post subject:  Wheels and back spacing
I need some help. Been trying to figure this out for a while. When I look at a rim for my buggy and it says 2 1/2 inch back spacing what does that mean? Where do they measure from? Im running a type 1 back end with stock arms and I want to put 31x12.50x15 tires on. Im looking at 10 inch wide rims but I dont want to have to run a wheel spacer to make them clear. Any help would be great. Thanks everyone. Figured I would go rite to the experts for good info :D

I believe most wheels are measured from the back of the center section, where the bolt holes are, to the outer edge of the wheel.

Put the rim on the floor outside up and stick tape measure through hole it should read 2.5" on your rims. As far as I know

2 1/2 on my stock wheel ? I have not ordered 10 inch wide rims yet cause im not sure what they mean when they say 2 1/2 inch back space. Does that put the wheel closer to the buggy or faurther away?

A 0 (zero) off set moves the wheel away from the trailing arm. A 0" (zero) offset would put the wheel center flush with the inside bead of the wheel. A 5" off set moves the wheel closer to the trailing arm, or closer to the center of the wheel.

Something to think about :idea: wider trailing arms give you more suspension travel and the axles hold up better do to less angle on them. With wider trailing arms you need more back spacing to be able to get around the trails. Also more back spacing makes it easier on the wheel bearings.

That's close Huey, but not quite. The wider the trailing arm the more travel. The longer the trailing arm the more weight it moves forward. The wider the arm the more offset one would need to maintain a track width and make things easier on the bearings.

The more off set he uses he will need to think about shock clearance.

Your right. I meant wider. With my 3X3's I have a lot more room for the shocks to mount.

Ok so....... A wheel that has 2 inch offset will put the tire farther away from trailing arm then a wheel with 4 inch back space rite? Im not retarded I swear lol just dont get why they make it so hard. :?
