ok... soo.. before i hear any why watercooled or why chaindrive i have a question that i SHoULD know the answer to but well i have never paid enough attention to know... do the front driveshafts on a 4x4 spin the same direction as the rears? and if so why couldnt you rear mount a sbc400 to a 700r to a front diff thats been cut down to just the pumpkin then add the after market outer bearings cut the axle shafts and weld the cv cups to them? i know its kind of a long set up with all the weight in the rear but you could sit over the diff like rear torsion and counter the weight with a long chain arm. i know its outside the box but i love the high horsepower and torque of sbc motors, easily and cheaply replaced parts outside of refabbin axles or diff housings and bolted&cut 42"boggers on a chaindrive....

chad i have been talkin this on here for well the whole 2yrs i have had my rail... just dawned on me how to rear mount the v8... i know it sounds like... one of the 2800passat junkyard conspiracy theories... but like me wantin to build a-arms with chevy truck parts its all access and $$$$$... and well i have a tbi 350 and another quadrajunk powered 350 in the garage... and well i pulled the tbi for this purpose... think how it would pull on a straight hill if you ran an air locker to the diff too.... cutters for the trails and flip the air locker and the power is evenly distributed to both locked wheels on a long straight pull...
and e if i could i would find a way to fit the 400sbc/4speed/and tcase combo out your jeep and add it to the rail.... just to 2wheel crawl what we high speed it it the conventional rails... and the wheelies in 4lo would be sweeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of options that don't include transaxles. Shorty powerglide direct coupled to a Currie 9" center with 930 flanges, 8.8 from an explorer, 5 link solid axle in the rear, V-drive from a boat to run mid or rear engine, Subaru transaxles, chain drives.......and plenty more I'm sure.

The problem with this is weight.A 350 out of a car or truck will only have a little over 200 hp in less you do a lot to it. That's not much more than a VW stroker.Plus a trany plus a pumpkin things getting heavy fast

I would say a v6 front wheel drive mt motor and trany run the front drive axles to a CD set up.Turbo it then you got 400 hp with very little weight and cost

I'll take jokes now. lol. I roast those uncut tsl 40's with the Passat, but if I were to lock the rear diff, OR cut, OR spike the tires I'd be back in the hostpital, and I AIN"T going back! And those 40" long trailing arms love to roll over rocks.
