Can someone give me the names of a few shops in ohio that work on VW Transmissions and know what they are doing? I'm getting a project 4 seat buggy and it has 3.8 gears and want to change it to at least 4.37 so I can spin 31" tires. I'm located in Columbus, OH.

Several members here do transaxle work. I think Davis Performance in Indiana does and Southern Buggies in Kentucky. I don't think you'll have a problem finding someone. Ask Roy on the boards here, he seems to do work on them. Also Turboblue, I think does as well

You will have a hard time finding a 4.37:1 ring and pinion set to fit in your late trans. My honest opinion is that it would be cheaper in the long run to put a bus trans in.

I have found a few vw shops around columbus my favorite so far is german auto works off of valleyview dr great guy. He wont let you leave without shootin the shit with him for a half hour. Not sure if he does trannys. But like previous people have said get a bus tranny and be done with it. Im also in columbus and building a 4 seater. Hit me up id love to come over and give you a hand. Have welder will travel lol.

Thanks for all the replies. After all the input I decided bus was the way to go. I wasn’t sure how the CVs would fit but I guess the quickest easiest way is to machine out the bus CVs so they fit in bug torsion. If any one has any good leads on a 3 rib hit me up

You can purchase conversion stub axles that fit in a type one bearing housing but are drilled for bus cv's. They can also machine the outer ring off the stub axle and then re-drill to fit the bus cv.

Here is a 6 rib which is an 091- link below. Stronger of the older bus transmissions. The 3 rib is an 002 and the 5 rib is also called a pyramid and it's an 002 also. 094 is the '84 and newer bus transaxles with side shift. Linkage is available for shifting and they have a much bigger reverse gear.

Help me understand this as I'm a little lost making a bus trans fit in a bug rear. I understand I need the stub axle to slip through the type 1 carrier. If I buy the conversion stub axles, is that all I need other than the bus axle and CVs or is there still a length issue with the bus axle shafts that need addressed?

As far as making a bus transmission fit in a standard type 1 beetle torsion housing, frame horns and stock trailing arms there is a method. I'd have to look it up honestly to get it right. It would start with a bus mount that would change the front and rear mount on you transaxle to fit the type 1 torsion. The axles I believe need to be shorter because the bus transaxle is wider at the drive flanges than the type 1 transaxle. The cv joints bigger hence the need for a conversion stub. There are a lot of methods to making whatever you want to work. People have done it dozens of different ways over the years. Searching this website, http://www.thesamba.com, http://www.shoptalkforums.com and others will help you figure it all out. Talking first hand to a buggy shop is priceless. Drew's and Larry's aren't too far and they both have very experienced people to help you out. Brian Drew and Larry both have been around a while and can hook you up with the information and the parts you need. One is in Dayton and the other is in Hamilton. It's worth a visit for the 1-1.5 hour drive

they sell a solid trans mount kit that is for bug to bus trans...and i think you can use sedan length axle with bus cv joints,but cant remember with stock trailing arms...youll need the conversion stubs....drews ussually stock the stubs,trans mount kit,and will give you proper length of axles...its an easy conversion,fairly cheap but defenetly worth having the bus trans

With bus tranny and stock arms you need 15 5/8" axles. To run stock bus axles you need 2x3 arms.
