still new with the rail thing... went down to wellsville sunday for the first time.. i must say IM HOOKED!!! :D i started the day at about 30-35 psi of oil pressure and as the motor got hot the psi slowly went down... im using 10w-30 and im thinking thats not heavy enough... wondering what weight to use and what kind! thanks!!! just a stock motor!

If it's cold out I use 20w-50 and if it's hot out I use 50 weight. Just my opinion!

I always run Castrol 10w40, oil pressure always drops once hot, When cold mine is at 40-50 Normal is 25-30, and hot hot like beating on it lol is usually bout 20-25 i dont like seeing it below 25 But its hard to see the gauage when ur busy driving .

You could throw a high volume/ high flow whatever they call it pump in, its relativly cheap, and easy to swap out.

The weight of motor oil should reflect the way the motor was built .What weight was it clearanced for when the motor was built ? I always clearanced my brg to run 50W. Kendal or vr1 racing oil.The rule of thumb you should have 10psi for every 1,000 RPM .So if you are turning 6 grand you need 60psi of oil pressure vise versa.

Nice info rock. My pressures were at an idle. shoulda said that.

Thicker viscosity oil doesn't mean better oil pressure.

Magnesium engine cases grow alot as they heat up and so do oil clearances.
Keep in mind that the factory VW spec for minimum oil pressure at idle on a type 1 is only 7lbs (alot of cheaper guages won't even read that accurately) and the oem oil light switch is designed to come on at 2-6lbs.
The important thing is that you have _some_ oil pressure at idle and that it raises immediately when the rpms come up off of idle.

if i remember correctly your running oil line to a gauge which the distance is probly around 6 ft of hose . the longer the hose the less accurate they are . i have personally seen a 8 pound difference in the different pressure gauges .

I am running 20w-50 royal purple XRP w/wix 51515r filter and I have no issues whatsoever year round. The motor idles around 38-40 psi cold and 25-28 psi hot, my cooling fan rarely kicks on and has a thermostat to kick the fan on at 170 degrees. You will be better off to run a digital or any electrical gauge for your oil pressure and have a light as well just in case your gauge fails for any reason, the manual gauge will work fine, but I prefer the other way.
