Post subject:  suggestions for a welder
im considering buying a welder, ( instead of running back and forth to my buddies using/borowing thier welders ) so i can give my old fugitive a face lift ( this will be last as it may take longer than expected due to a lot of "undoeing" and then "redoing" ), fix a few bent bars on my single seater ( 1st on the to do list ), and build a new cobra ( a close 2nd on the to do list ) all 3 within the next few months if all goes as planned 8)

these are the 4 models/brands im considering, and pretty sure i want one that runs on 220v, and not sure but one compatible with a spool gun for welding aluminum might be nice also :?

chris i got a 210 miller with the spoolgun for alum. and it works great.the only thing its hard to weld below and .125 with the spool gun .tig would probably work better

chris i have used millers,lincolns, and hobarts and currently own a clark i dont think you can go wrong with any of those brands :wink: although the hobarts are in lots of stores now days and would be very easy picking up supp for

I have a Hobart 185, I didn't have a 240 outlet in my shop, or I'da gone bigger. It's been a good machine (I'm a hack), but have done alum with it as well (no spool gun). The Horbart and the Miller are basically the same since Miller bought Hobart some years back. I chose the Hobart due to readiness of parts (like bmoore said). You can get most all parts at tractor supply. I did purchase mine from a local welding supply to give them my business (it was only like 10 bucks more) and the few phone calls I had to make to them in the beginning were well worth that extra cash. They also showed me the internals of both and said the Miller's higher price was mainly due to the name, they were a dealer for both and really didn't have to do that. They also told me that they sold more Millers because that's what most of their customers had owned in the past. Again, like bmoore said, you can't go wrong w/ any on them.

we are in the excavating buisness and i have an asortment of welders. though i am partial to lincolns. (cousin is salesman for them.) i have a 135 110v running .035 wire on gas. plenty big enough for anything on a buggy. i am pretty good welder. my cousin is simply amazing! have never run into something on buggy its not big enough for. i have a 250 and a ranger 305d also. have a miller 110v that dont get used much but works very well. had a hobart and was junk in my mind

My Hobart has Miller parts on it ...I have a Lincoln and a Hobart ....Kinda like the Hobart better

my freind has been welding for a long time in his garage he has a 120 volt lincoln and i have used it and it works great ! my welder is a 120volt firepower which i was told is made by lincoln but not sure , napa sells them . on my welder it works ok but when you weld for around 10 to15 min it starts makeing a poor weld no matter what i try so i let the machine stay on cooling for 10 to 20 min and its good again , its sucks in my opinion but cant afford to buy a nice one ! i was told it does not have a good duty cycle ! MY OTHER FREIND BOUGHT A SNAP ON 120 VOLT AND ITS WELDS GREAT AND AS LONG AS YOU WANT TO THE WELDER IS THE SAME SIZE AS MINE AND WEIGHT 3 TIMES AS MUCH (oops locked the capps) i was told the copper winding on the inside is for the better duty cycle ! if i was to buy a new welder it would by far be the miller 240 volt that has the auto set two of my freinds bought it at a welding shop for 800 bucks and buy far has worked the belt for me to use cause im a ameture ! just voiceing my opinion and hope you enjoyed it cause that just took me 10 min to type 8) :lol:

ps i was also told a 240 volt welder has less amp draw which means lower electric bill when welding alot , make sence to me but maybe ck into that also .

I have watching this post and figured that there would have been more feedback.I to hope to get a new welder myself by this summer,and was curious what most on here suggested.I talked to a local miller/hobart welder supplier and he said that after new years he would be able to get dealer demos,and left over floor models and welders that has been traveling to trade shows and conventions.it was a good bit cheaper to buy these and they still have the full warranty and the biggest part have never even been welded with.thought I'd tell you maybe your local guy (if he's a friend). Would let you in on these deals.chad :mrgreen:

i have a lincon 180 and the only thing i dont like about it is the dials on it. the one has A, B, C, D settings, and there is not enough fine adjustment on it, and when i do crank it up and start burning heavier metal, it shut down on me a couple of times, there is not a long enough duty cycle, my buddy has the miller mig welder. and he really likes it alot. he has more fine adjusting on there.

like i said i have a clark 220 now and really like it :wink: but ive done alot of welding at aboones shop with his 220 hobart and if i was to buy another one i would personally buy the hobart for the price :wink: but if money was no object it would be the 3300 miller :D

I use for just about everything a Miller 135, 120V MIG. For aluminum I have a Miller SCP 200 with a spool gun and my TIG is, you guessed it a Miller Syncrowave 180 TD. Got a Miller plasma cutter too. I think I like Miller products.

well it seems miller is ahead of the game and hobart a close 2nd, not suprising since hobart is made by miller

does anybody know anything about the " auto set " on the miller welders ?

I have a buddy that welds for a living, and he has auto set on his buggy welder and uses it all the time and swears by it, thats good enough for me! I would without a doubt go with a miller 180. It is IMO the perfect buggy welder! I have a miller 175 at home, a passport in my service truck, and at my shop I have a 251, econo-tig, spectrum 625 (broken), and a syncrowave 250, and a thermal dynamics cutmaster 82. I am also a die-hard miller :mrgreen:
