I'm down here in Tennessee on our annual anniversary atv trip. Last year I saw these buggies in the woods same with this year. I finally started to ask questions and this forum came up, so here I am. I am interested in getting into this sport. I am at Windrock Park right now and was at Brimstone last week. We are heading back home today. I am not sure of what things are called. We ride atv's and a Polaris rzr right now. I would be interested in getting a 2 seater with independent rear suspension and front suspension set up for trail riding. What do I start with or what would that type of frame be known as. I'm not sure what to even look for as far as something used goes. Any basic info would be great, just to get me pointed in the right direction. Thank you!

The best advise I can give you is Read, Read and Read this site and educate yourself on the unending mutitudes of buggy configureations.
I will give some basics to look for:

IRS rear suspension Preferablely with Type 2 or 930CVs
Rear Disk brakes
Cutter Brakes
King and Link pin front supension with or with out brake (oersonal preference)
Minimum motor size 1915
3 rib Transmission Minimum

The most Important advise i can give a newcomer is buy a complete and running Buggy to start with to get your feet wet. If you see something you interested in post pics and price of it here and we give our opinions of it (all 10,000 of them lol.)

Like Ody said READ READ READ!!!
you can find most any thing you would ever want to know on here.
I would buy a complete buggy or roller to start with and if you ask around where you live im sure you can find a local VW guy. turns out a guy i knew for years is into VWs and never even knew until i asked.
Good Luck :D

I found this one about 45 minutes from my house. Just got back from Tennessee so I wont be taking a look at it until sometime this week. It doesn't appear to be a 2 seater though. I will be reading a bunch over the weekend to get a better idea of what is involved. Thanks for the advice. This guy says he has 2 other frames for buggies. I am very mechanically inclined and would love to have a summer project, but I think a functioning cart would be better. Thanks again!

I would pass on that one unless you intend to strip it down and start over. That includes rebuilding the engine. It appears its been sitting out in the weather for some time with no cover over the exhaust. The motor probably has rain water in and is pretty rusted out internally. That 1200 bucks will quickly turn into 5000 bucks. I could be wrong however thats my first take on the Buggy.

A lot depends on what you want.. ALL BUGGIES require wrench turning... A buggy is not like a Razor where you just ride, ride, ride and then take it to the shop.

If are looking to get into something cheap and rebuild the entire buggy.. That might be a good choice. There are a lot of benefits to rebuilding a buggy from the ground up. It makes it easier to troubleshoot problems when you know every nut, bolt and wire..

However, it is much easier and more cost effective to buy a well built buggy and learn along the way.

What is your aptitude for fixing, modifying and building things?

I am not afraid of tearing things apart and rebuilding engines or whatever. I have a 92 banshee that is all worked over with all the work done by me besides the bore and hone. I know engines. Also have a 2003 suzuki z 400 with lots of upgrades. That one i will be selling.
But I would guess that if you guys think it's a pile of crap, I would take your advice. If I saved up a bit more cash and sell my Z, I could get something a little more turn key. I'd like something that runs and is fun ,but still needs a little TLC. I agree that if I tore it apart I would know all the nuts and bolts , which I like that idea, but would like to be able to ride it before having to dump a boat load of cash into it. Thanks for the help! I'm sure I can find something. I will keep up the research on this forum and keep my eye out for something for sale thats in my price range , yet rideable. If I can sell my z400, that would give me enough to get something good.

Find a turn key rail , When I first started all i did was wrench on mine all summer long. I hated it until i finally got the bugs worked outta it.

its always best to buy a good running one if its your first cause you can get tired of it fast if you buy a pile of crap and have the intentions of building it so try and find a good one to enjoy a little and then tear it down and build it bigger and better later

ive seen more folks than i care to remember do exactly what jesse said, and i have to agree 110% with oddy's "starter buggy " requirements

and as far as a frame as long as you like the style, it's safe and has sufficient head room is pretty much all that matters

look at this and it will cover a lot of the more popular "factory built" frames to get an idea of the frame you want

Ok guys, got another lead on a machine. A guy that works at Monroe Muffler in my area had it sitting there in the parking lot for sale for a while. I called about it and he ended up taking it back home. lol ! So i guess I will be going over his place to take a look at it next week. 2 seater with 1972 1 6 motor he says, with IRS. I will try to get some more info and take picks to post and get your input. Asking $1300 o.b.o. I also found a dealer in the area. Like 45 minutes from my house. The web site is v-dubstore.com. They sell frames and a ton of parts for these machines! Sweet ! One of my friends used to race them. I didnt even know these were the machines he was racing until I started talking to him about this. He was like, "those are the buggies I told you I was racing!" lol! I didnt know....
