Hi Guys I am starting my wiring and have a question. I am using a battery cutoff switch in my dash panel so I can cut all power to everything. I have the postive cable going to the starter then I will go from starter to battery cutoff at the dash then to a fuse block for everything. My question is what guage wire should I use from the battery to the cutoff. I was thinking #8 or #10 what do you think??? Thanks MoblMec Tim |

mine has #8 on it but i have always been told if you wire in a kill all to put it on the neg side im not sure why but drag cars always have to have it on the neg also. |

On the neg side so wrenches and other objects don't short on it. The further apart the batt and starter are the fatter the cable.However the fat cables do draw more juice, same with long skinny ones.Too skinny can get hot fast.Your starter will have more and longer power if it's set up rite.To draw juice you must use a yellow crayon.  I have a #6 five ft apart.

kill power with switch closes to battery as you can using ground side ... using a switch in the dash to kill power will result in a possible problem do to you have a hot wire all the time going to your dash switch. |

JMO , If you wire batt - to the batt switch , then batt switch to ground , when you shut the switch off you loose all ground. No ground,no power. Simple as that. I think the NHRA guys, some, go the other way fr other reasons [magneto's etc]. The previously described way you have no pos. load across the switch. It only completes the ground. No Ground, No Power? |

You can draw more water through a bigger hose,,,you can draw more juice through a bigger cable

Wire size is rated in Ampacity. The larger the wire the greater the Ampacity. I have a "00" (5/8" OD) welding cable running from my battery up front to the starter in the rear to minimize voltage drop keeping current draw down. Typical Wire Gauge protection ratings: #14 - 15 AMP #12 - 20 AMP #10 - 30 AMP # 8 - 40 AMP # 6 - 60 AMP |

theres a really good post on here somewhere with a list made of what gauge to use for what, such as ? gauge for gauges and idiot lights, ? gauge for headlights, ? gauge from bat. and so on, maybe whoever posted it will post the link to that thread |
