I am doing a w/c swap soon and im wondering the cheapest way to step into a fuel cell or modify my tank to work. I have a round poly and was wondering if i could just sink a pump and sending unit into it so i wont have to use an electric aftermarket pump and regulator? or do i need to get a cell?

There a lot a answers to this question. When I did mine I felt I needed more weight up front to counter the added weight in the back so I bought a 5 gallon fuel cell and mounted it up front. Five gallon is enough fuel for an EFI engine . I was also running into space issue with the lager engine, radiator, larger oil filter, etc. in the back so it helped free up some space in the rear area . I use an inline EFI pump and clear plastic filter,,kinda like the VW fuel filter just a little bigger. My pump is mounted closer to the engine than the fuel cell. This set up works for me,,,,,for now
It may depend on where you have room. You may decide to use your poly tank and leave it where it is. You may need to add a return port to the tank. EFI needs to return fuel to the tank. Good Luck.

So you run an inline pump? wtb a regulator?

I am not sure about the regulator,,I think EFI engines need the big pressure of an EFI pump and the regulator is built in somehow if it even has one. The return line allows the residual fuel to return to the fuel cell,,or low side of the pump.

get a booster pump off a 80's-90's ford truck thats what i use its a inline pump. mount it close to the fuel cell. it pushes better then pulls.

The return dosen't have to go back to the cell. Put a T in a little before the pump, that will take care of the return fuel.

It might work but don't the fuel need to cool,,,thought that might be the reason for going into the tank,,maybe not,,,you taught me something.

This is the way I have mine done and no problems yet. I have ran both very hot days and very cold days. Beats drilling and tapping the fuel cell.

i think i may just take the tank from the van and make it smaller to fit.

Sounds dangerous,,,be careful. The T on the low pressure side of the supply line may be the simplest fix

altering a used gas tank is possibly one of the worst ideas ever.

thats what i'd end up doing. Where did you get and what pumps are people running? i'd like to keep my poly tank (very low cash to play with) but idk if ill be able to do it with the poly.

So i was jsut looking at inline fuel pumps, and boy are they EXPENSIVE! How did you guys do your gas lines? stock stuff or did you fabricate it? I'm sorry im asking so many questions about so many things, but i have no clue how im going to attempt this, let alone pull it off and have everything work.

i have well had a poly tank on my buggy and was ok with it untill i had a few guys tell me about how unsafe they are and one story was about how a guys new buggy caught fire because of one , i took there advise and its gone , point is i would listen to these guys on safety for sure !!! one short cut that should not be taken is the fuels safe haven !

Ford F150 fuel injected trucks from the 89-93 model years are Delco EP286. This is what I have been running on my buggy for 2 years now.

I have a race legal 12gal foam filled fuel cell that I only used for a year that I'd sell for around $100.

Yes, it is a very bad idea ....unless you take the proper steps.
We have repaired many steel fuel tanks at my work. Empty it completely, let it sit over night opened up as much as possible (filler cap off and sending unit door removed) with a fan blowing across it. The next part sounds crazy but it works. Run a shop exhaust hose (small dryer vent hose might work) from the exhaust pipe of a truck (or other larger motored vehicle) into the tank. Let it run in there a few minutes, and leave it idling while you weld, grind, cut or whatever. The CO from the exhaust is inert , and it will push out any 0xygen present so there is no way for ignition to happen.

(we do still do this outside, just in case, and to avoid asphyxiation  )
