85w90. NON synthetic. Dont know if any one brand is better than another. Chuck says it doesnt matter, just change it every year or so. |

Thats what Chuck told me when I asked what to put in mine. Dont know why. Whatvr he says about a tranny, its correct. No explanation needed for me. |

I would agree to not use Synthetic to break in a trans, however I see know reason not to run it after break in. That is odd that he would say that. I would really like to know why. |

the synthetic is too slippery! The syncros want some friction and is you just run synthetic you can notice the gears grind a little when shifting. I even squirt a little moly grease into my tranny to help it shift smoother |

Personally I find CRX 75w90 NT works very well in most old EP90 specced gearboxes, never tried it in an 091, but it works well in the peugeot MA gearboxes and they're really fussy about oil. |

(If you can't find anything suitable, mix the gearbox oil 2 to 1 with Silkolene Pro RSF 2.5w - it's a damper oil but the makeup is inherently compatible with a gear oil, it's got a fantastic viscosity index - don't be tempted to use the Fox or King oils if you have it laying around, too thick and unstable  )Anyhow, not only is the moly in the grease not good for the synchro's, the complex soaps from a grease in the gearbox aren't good either as they tend to allow micro-caviation to occur on the meshing teeth which accelerates wear and tear. Total BV spec 75w80 is also a good one for old synchro 'boxes, if you're looking for something cheap. |

I always used Royal Purple .I have only broke 091 when I knew it was about to happen [They can only take so much] But I never had a breakdown because of my oil . I also run full Synthetic in my Stump grinder gear boxes .Under extreme loads it will stay in longer not boil |

I run penzoil 85-95 mixed with Redline shock proof gear oil. Lets face it here, if any of my buggies break a transmission due to not having the correct oil before I break 'em, I'm going to be a happy camper

WOW  You say that like 3 yrs without a broke tranny is a good thing.And you aint the only one I've heard that from. I dont understand how folks break Weddle stuffed 6 ribs so often. I know that racing is very tough on everything, but there is 20 yr old trannies in our group that have been absolutely punished with hi rpm Stage 4 clutch drops hooked to strong 2500s (or bigger) on fresh sharpened firestones in good biting dirt. They withstand this abuse for years n years every weekend. Must be something Chuck does when he builds them.  My tranny is about the only thing on my buggy I am NOT worried about breaking.

i dont think it was even me being rough on it, the case was bad and should have been replaced when we built it. I dont get too worried about breaking it, lord knows im not too worried about it when I'm on the track double clutchin it at 4000rpm and 60+mph jumps on the throttle arnt very easy on them either. all clear thoughts and common sense fly out the window net when your battleing for 1st place
