is there any way to run a 5 rib 4:86 r & p in a 6 rib case using the 091 gear stack? |

I think it can be done with a 5 rib,,carrier and all,,, but I know that I run a 4.86 in a 6 rib . It came out of a mid shift tranny and you need to machine some of the shaft off of the Pinion gear. |

use all the gears out of the 4;86 and use the 4;86 r & p and use the 091 diff,and then use the 5 rib case,,,the 5 rib case,,,i think is stronger,,,so u can use either case,,,,theres not that much difference in 091 gears and the gears that came out of a 5 rib |

Why would you want to? You cannot put the 6 rib gear stack into a 3 or 5 rib case. Seems like I tried that in my mind several years back, but I'm old and forgetful. |

Seems like I tried that in my mind several years back, but I'm old and forgetful. 3,,5,,and 6 rib cases are the same length,,mid section is a little longer on an 091 I think if you run the 3, 5 rib bellhousing on a 091, 3, 5, and 6-rib is the same length, but if you run a 6-rib bellhousing on any of them, it is 3/4" longer, mine would'nt fit because it was setup for the 3, 5-rib bellhousing and had to move the tabs back 3/4" to make my tranny fit right and I am running a 6-rib bellhousing. My tranny was oringinally an early-model side shifter and was converted over to nosecone and that's how I ended up with that particular bellhousing, it was also off of a 2.0L VW engine as well. You can PM Eric Debord and ask him those R&P questions, he can answer them for you. I don't know the answer for sure though. |

I was under the impression that a 6 rib bell housing was 1/2" or so longer ,,but when I sit a 6 rib and 3 rib bell housing side by side they were level across,  ,,I think as stated earlier the mid section must be the longer part. Eric,,,,please explain

mid section is longer on a 6...when u switch from a 3 or 5 rib to a 6 rib ( with 3 or 5 rib bell) u have to shim ur lower trans bracket a 1/4 -3/8 of an inch towards (dont remeber exactly) the bell while ur rear trans bracket stays the same...and im pretty sure the only difference in the bells from all them is the dept of where the starter bolts on we have actually machined down a 6 rib bell(where the starter goes)to use are starters..... |
