I have been reading some of the posts on the side shift six rib. I like the fact that reverse is a good strong gear in the water cooled model. If I was to run across a side shift 6-rib for sale, how can I tell by looking at it if it is from a water cooled Vanagon or it is the air cooled model? For you guys that have fabricated the side shift linkage and posted pics, GREAT fab work! Thanks, Dale |

The 83 and earyler side shifts were air cooled and used the same basic 6 rib trans. The changed out the tail section and incorpoated the side shift linkage. The 84 and later is a pretty much different trans less bell housing and R & P. the side shift linkage comes out of the center case. |

What are the differences on the inside? Is one stronger than the other? Will the super diff also work in the water cooled? What transmission had the super diff in it origninally? Was it a military thing or what? Hows that for a bag of questions |

The super diff for the two are different. The super diff did not come in any US Export model transaxle except for some rare synchro models and possibly some diesel powered. The water cooled reverse is 10x stronger than the air cooled. |

So reverse is the only real advantge of the water cooled |

Goes as hard reverse as he does forward. No issues so far. Also some are geared a bit lower than a 091 6 rib too. http://volksweb.relitech.com/helmut/GEA ... atertranny |

everyone i know that has one their gears r reversed first is where 3rd is and second where 4th is ans so on is it possible to keep it normal |

That diagonal flat aluminum bar with the holes in this picture. If they have the linkage kit I sell and it's installed correctly, it is the typical H pattern. Only difference is reverse is beside 1st now.

Here's a couple of pictures I took of the reverse gear setup of the midshift trans. They are a stronger setup because they are constant mesh so no only putting it in half way and shearing part of a tooth off. They are also stronger because they are helical cut gears instead of straight cut. This setup makes for about two full teeth in contact at the same time versus only on tooth supporting the load on the regular 6 rib trans. The gears are also a good bit larger in addition to the other stuff. John ![]()

Do you have any pictures of the air cooled transmission so we can see the comparison? |
