Post subject:  changing from 3 rib to 091 have questions

I am going to pick up a 091 6 rib on Tuesday of next week after the ride at the creek. I have a 3rib now in my rail, what differences will I have in installing the 091? Differences in length, shifter rod placement and so forth? I know that 1st is going to be a big difference over the 3rib gearing but will give me the wheel speed to climb with. Also be better to go to the stick O matic later on. I am trading my 3 rib in on the 091 so it won't be for sale sorry.

I did the swap this past summer. In my case I kept the 3 rib bell housing .This allowed me to use the existing starter. The throw out bearing holder isn't as beefy on the 3 rib as the 6 rib but I had no problems with it so I kept it. The tranny is longer so I removed the front tranny mount from the torsion and ground about a half inch off and welded it back on. Of course the shifter rod had to be shortened but I had an adjustable end on it and just enough adjustment . If you do not move the front mount forward then you need to space the rear mount. This is confusing but you will see what I mean when you do the swap. I needed to move the front forward because my exhaust was already tight in the back. Keeping the weight forward is important for balance anyway. See you at the creek. 8)

It depends on which gland nut you run. I think with a chromoly one from CB, you have to shorten the main shaft about 1/4", then kind of round it off a little with a grinder. But the Scat has a bigger ID on the bearing (or somethin other :roll: ), and main shaft will work as is. Least thats how it has worked out for me.

Yes. You will need to grind off about 1/4" from the input shaft, not the mainshaft.

I got lucky I guess. I did not have to shorten the mainshaft. It is a little more work to move the front mount forward but it eliminates spacers and keeps a little more weight forward . Toss up. 8)

what I do know about going from a 3-rib to a 6-rib, that the overall length is 3/4" longer.

When I went from 3 rib to 6 rib I missed the 538 r&p. However I noticed I could do about as well climbing. It seemed the engine was bogging but the Subaru lugged pretty good. Some folks put 542 r&p in the 091 and have a strong tranny and low gearing too. My buggy is heavy expecially with the subaru engine and I feel I would rather have 538 gearing but I am tired of breaking 3 ribs. oh yea , I am running bogger 35's 8)

I was told that the trail riding would suffer some on take off really but that it would be great for the hills and getting the wheel speed. I should have asked what the gearing was but I didn't probably stock gears.

Rockette,,, I understand that those aint cheap and are weaker. Unless the aftermarket are a whole lot stronger. I seem to be the only one with that problem,,,the lighter bugs with smaller tires seem to love the 456. 8)

when i bought my new frame last fall from toni bagley ( owner of beeline ) and went to pick it up i asked him why he put spacers on the end of the horns. he told me thats why he ask me if i was going to run a six rib and extend trailing arms and by extending the horns it put the weight back where it needed to be, on the back tires & inproved the stearing at the same time.

Well I won't be going to the 6 rib, damn thing was sold out from under me.
A little bit pissed off about it to be honest, twice now it has happened on different things in the past two months.

Hell with it, I'll ride with my 3 rib.
