Post subject:  what clutch/pressure plate to run?

Since I've apparently caught "the bug" again and have finally got off my rear to fix some LOOOONG awaited issues I'm nearing the end of my list (and money) and it's time to address the clutch. Clutch still works ok but doesn't grip nowhere near what it should. I'm curious to see and looking for suggestions on decent clutch/pressure plate setup. BTW I'm running a 1641 with 3 rib. I haven't pulled motor yet to see whats up with the clutch but it doesn't release exactly right. I've got the clutch adjusted to where the pedal has to be pressed way down to disengage to where you can put it in gear. Did this because when I put motor in this time and took it out the first time the clutch was slipping terribly in 3rd & 4th pretty much when you gave it any gas. So I backed the adjustment wingnut all the way off to make sure clutch was fully engaging and it's a lot better but if I throttle it hard climbing something in 2nd it will slip. When loading it on my T trailer, I can notice that when the belly skidplate starts to slide on rail that it doesn't engage right. Feels just like it's just adjusted wrong but definitely not the case this time. pressure plate & clutch if Iremember right is a stock(ish) replacement. I'm going to hopefully pull motor in next week or so to try & diagnose. But until then I'm trying to get opinions on a good working clutch setup that's cheap. Sorry for being so long! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I always ran stock pressure plate n stock disc even on the 1915 with a 6 rib. Kennedy stage one plate with stock disc worked good also. Using same setup for now on my new 2276

forgot to add that I'm using stock pedal assembly at the moment. That's another thing I was looking into changing was a CNC hyd. pedal assembly but figure I'll wait since it's not a "have to" thing right now. I ordered a new bowden tube & bracket to mount to tranny, & put a new clutch cable & protective tubing that covers the clutch cable. The disk had quite a bit left on it I remember but I can't remember how the flywheel surface looked. What kind of flywheel do yall run? Stock weight or lightened?

What rocket engine were running to need a stage 4 that is like tits on a boar. Why people don't visit the Kennedy Engineering web site to size their clutch. They have horsepower and torque ratings.

I could see a stage 4 with like an LS v8 twin turbo.

A stage I clutch with a Cush lock disk should be mor than enough for a 1641 with a three rib. I ran a stage I with a 6 rib and 2276 engine never had a problem with slipping unless I slipped it.

Technically Kenadys state's a stage one PP will handle just about any car on this site however I totaly disagree. I currenty have a stage 3 PP in my buggy along with a new composite dual friction plate I am trying this season. A stage two PP with a Daikin Super disk only lasted me a half a season. After that I went to a stage 3 with a Kenady 6 puck. It lasted two seasons and had .010" of material left before it ate the rivots when I took it out over this winter..

Got it cheap and it worked great on my 3.3 suby. Yea,, OOps,,,I didnt read the post close. I guess that is over kill. I don't know enough about that to know what overkill would do. I guess there are times when you actually want some slip.

if your using a stock " cable pedal" get a stock pressure plate and a kush- lock disc and you'll be good to go.. rode it for years with a 1641 and 3 rib!!!

I have a brand new Kennedy stage 2 with a Kush loc disc. My new flywheel is 228mm so this 200mm needs to go. It has about 5 hours run time on it. PM for details if interested.

Post subject:  Re: what clutch/pressure plate to run?

well got it apart and found the culprit...2 of the pressure plate bolts had came out and about half of the fingers on press plate had pressure on them. Makes perfect sense now how it was still drivable, yet how it slipped like hell on any kind of decent hill. It couldn't have had hardly any pressure against the clutch when engaged. So....I'm going to try it tomorrow morn and see and hopefully won't need that press plate hillaholic, I'm gonna have to get a clutch though. It's a 4 puck disk in it now, that might have enough to last thru the summer or lil later but definitely going to need one. So looks like pretty much is sayin stock press plate and kush lok disk?
