Post subject:  Shifting Question

Started installing my tranny yesterday(side shift in nose cone) and i think i figured out my linkage but the way ive got it figured my 1st is lower left 2nd is upper left 3rd lower right 4th upper right and reverse is all the way left and back.
standard shift has 1st upper left and reverse all the left and up right?
is the lock out for reverse on the shifter gonna screw me or what?

My side shift (water cooled) shifts like a normal bus trans, except reverse is next to first instead of second

im pretty sure racebugg said his was

R - 1 - 3
.....2 - 4

and the "standard" pattern for all the "older" vw's is

.....1 - 3
R - 2 - 4

The way I'm doin my linkage mine will look like this

... 2. 4
R. 1. 3
I don't think that'll be a prob If you said older stuff reverse was lower left thanks for the input 8)

Not sure how you have your linkage attached, but it sounds like you have the arm mounted above the rod sticking out of the tranny. If you flip it over so the arm is below the shift rod it will correct you problem.

Look at the black piece of the linkage, If i was to rotate that 180 degrees so the silver arm was above the shift rod it would reverse the shift pattern. Hope this helps.

i had same trans in mine before and it shifted same way your saying yours does. shift pattern dont mean a thing. if its in gear then its in gear. plus it fun to watch people try to move it and they cant find first!

I used to run the drag fast and liked it, but since changed it to a stock shifter cut down, and the throw is much less.

Really... how is the feel when u do that? Is the stock shifter as tight as the drag fast as far as going from second to third gear?
