You're right, the ratios aren't great. I'd need to use an early trans from a 1.6 engine with diesel input shaft..
but bear in mind they're worthless over here, I can get them for £50 eachRemember your VR6 is mounted transverse..

As my buggy is mid engined I run a SA trans with a flipped diff, as in my other thread about flipping the diff in a 6 rib made it clear that wasn't a solution I wondered about using the trans from an Audi. Does anyone know anyone that has done this? the Audi's are available in a range of sizes and engine configs they must be pretty tough.. and if you can get adaptors to run WC VW/Audi with a type 1 trans then it must be possible to adapt a type 1 engine to the Audi trans.. |

not sure about the audi trns. you are aware that you can use a 6 rib by flippinf bell housing over and mounting trans in reversed and upside down? the make shift linkages to reach around the back. allot of sand drag cars are set up this way |

I've tried to find details of the 6 rib flip but have so far failed! |

I don't know about your situation but Audi and Passat 2000 and up have a trans that looks just like a bus trans(maybe that is what you have already)( I know Audi had others in the 80's 90's).2000+they have 4 valve per cyl motors and the power and rpm is unreal. That, mounted in the rear with the whole motor, trans, axles, bearring housing, brakes and wheels would be cheap and dangerous.I started to do it but it was geared to high, but in a Kentucky 1 seater with SMALL tires it may be a winning combination (especially an automatic).VR6 4 valve has 240 hp. My VR6 2 valve has 175 and has un real smooth high rpm.Basically the newer Passats and Audis have inline fwd motor and trans in the front of the car. Like a Sooby. |

the vr6 2ooo and up is not transverse. They are fwd inline with the car(like a SOOBY) .But , with all that power who needs a low gear?Some of those Kentucky 1 seaters have a LOW 2nd gear which they are using it as a HIGH 1st.I don't use or need the 1st in my fwd Passat longways with the Continental IRS diff .I've got a HEAVY 2 seater and it roasts my 38 cut swampers. Have TSL cut 40's for this year just so I can grab some grip.

If you get in touch with the Bakewells through the AWDC (yes, they're still bloody competing!), they've just put on in Phil's buggy with a V6 on the back. |

They are fwd inline with the car(like a SOOBY) That must be a difference between Euro and USA then as the VR6 engine is only fitted transverse over here, either as 2.8 or 2.9.. then became the multivalve R32 engine but still fitted transverse. Our B5 and B5.5 Passat were available as a 2.8 V6 but its the audi wide angle V6 available in 12 and 30valve versions.. Lovely engine, I have one in my Audi 80 (Audi 4000 on your side of the pond) I've seriously considered fitting one in the rail.. This is mine..   Probably a little too clean for a rail. |

WOW! NOW THAT'S WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! Motor and auto trans in a 1 seater with cut 31's,mid engine!With no parasitic accessories nor cat. converter.Volkswagen is the parent company of Audi and Porshe,so see, they are still trying to help the buggy world out.  Parts are cheap if I need them. I have a core motor plus when I see Passats at Pull a Part I pluck gadgets off an put them in my pocket.

Thanks. I'll look into it.The death of my fwd trans was the 1/2 a$$ welded diff.I never welded one b4 and I did it with a stickwelder.A spool from these guys would be worth looking into. |

Over here 99 and down look like the 1 with the head gone.Mine is a 97.  I sure like the sound of these motors with a 3.5" open homemade exaust.To us a tranverse is perpendicular to the car.

It uses the bus tranaxle. the audi automatic is just the best one to use with the high horsepower V8's (I just wish i had the hp to go with that V8) |
