Can the diff be flipped in a 3 rib bus trans for use in a mid engine rail?

I'm switching from SA and need to be sure before I pick one up..

Same question about vanagon (T25) 6 rib..

No, the pinion is not centered like sedan trans. You can mount it upside down and it will work. Your starter and clutch linkage will be on the bottom. It does work.

just wondering,,,and it has probably been discussed,,,,but can't you just flip the bell housing to get the starter and clutch on top? :?

found this post on another site that may answer my question:

"ran a bus upside down for years, before all the new trans came out, back in the 80`s. I may still have the old bus bellhousing that I used. Have to reweld the bolt pattern on the belhousing because the top and the botton are spaced different ( the 4 bolts that bolt to the motor). Ran a 400 hp turbo Type 4 motor. It was the 486 R&P ( 5 rib) Bus trans with all FTC gears. Went thru a few R&P over the years but the gears held up. You lose your CV height when you flip it, puts the CV`s higher( I had 13 in of travel). Have to drill holes inside of the top of case, which will be on the bottom when you flip it so the the oil drain thru. In the late 90`s I went to Dave Folts trans that is set up for mid engine, has the larger ring and pinon. Not much more money than a full built bus. I never broken it. "

If anyone has pics of said modification I'd love to see them. Does the midsection rotate on the bellhousing or is an adaptor used?

I think I've got that guys type 4 motor in my shop. I had some pics of his Dave Folts tranny when it was for sale, but that doesn't help you much.

You could always use a Porsche 914 tranny if you want mid engine. They are a 5 speed and I hear they have a weak 1st gear but are supposed to be pretty good as long as you don't abuse 1st. They can be found pretty cheap too. Also, you could use the stock linkage to save the hassle of fabricating your own.
