Post subject:  Using Stock VW shifter on a Vanagon mid shift

Anybody using a VW shifter with there mid shift trans. Along with the Side shift to nosecone shift linkage that Turboblue offers. I have been using a Bugpack shifter and have been having trouble getting reverse with it so I decided to try a VW shifter I have laying around. Note that stock shift pattern puts reverse in the lower left position were as the mid shift trans is in the upper left position. It appears (At least on my shift box) the shaft travel is limited to only half of the stroke in reverse. This is not an issue with the standard shift patttern as its in that direction. However I can not go the opposite direction. I need to know if this is typical with all VWs or only with the shift box i have.
Thanks in advance.

Ok let me rephrase this. Is anybody using a stock VW shifter on any vw trans? If so can you check to see if reverse is limited to only half of the stroke. It would have to disconnected from the trans to test.

you made me curious ody! the new buggy i bought for the wife has stock shifter, ive noticed it always feels barely in reverse,(jumps out easy) so i pulled the shifter to reverse and then disconnected the shift rod and you are rite it was only about half engaged :? the rest of the gears shift fine :?: now this is a stock sedan tranny... but i do know i dont have that problem with my shifter???

So yours is a Mid shift with the reverse in the upper left versus the typical lower left. If so what did you do to make it work correctly?

I have midshift trans, same linkage and empi shifter. I have not been happy with any of the shifting since i installed last winter. My shifter sucks so i was considering a scat drag fast as a first step to making things better. If the stock shifter or something else works better i,m up for any and all sugestions.
Thanks Tony

I like the ideal of the stock style shifter because it has the spring loaded pin in the ball that keeps it tight in the socket, were as the Empi and Bugpack style do not.

Supershifter, throw is mostly unlimited by shifter.

bigscott has the same linkage on his old buggy the linkage has alot of play in it and is very hard to dial in and it still doesnt work that good so i think so we went with the one weddle sales and it works very well no play and very smooth with a stock or empi shifter i have tryed them both i will only use weddles linkage from now on theres a post on the weddle linkage hear in the trans sec its the one that says new linkage for the vanagon side shift trany

The biggest isue with the linkage is the link from the trans to the main linkage. It flexs way to much to get enough throw. Especially after the small 3/8" brass bushings wear. I addded fender washers to icrease the surfavce area and it helped some. There is simply not enough surface to keep the link arm straight as you push it from side to side. It moves on an angle and the throw becomes less and less as it wears:

My solution, was to increase the bearing surface to keep the linkage straight thru its throw. I made this Dogbone linkage useing 5/8" X 1 1/2" long shoulder bolts.

Old link laying on top of Dog bone link:

making that arm did it help thats what the problem we had the weddle linkage has less moving parts

Post subject:  Re: Using Stock VW shifter on a Vanagon mid shift

Yes it helped a lot. The shifter arm actually tracks the movement of the cross bar on the main linkage. I believe it will even work better this season as I replaced the crossarm bushings and tightened up the two "U" joints in the shaft and just ordered another Bugpak shifter. The problem with linkage systems is sloppy parts are additive. Eliminate slop and things get better.

Did you figure out your problem with reverse?

Post subject:  Re: Using Stock VW shifter on a Vanagon mid shift

It would appear the stocke shifter is really only designed to go lower left for reverse. So I have tested mine and Madmikes. Madmike has new shifter and box. His does the same thing as mine. The lockout plate only has a ramp clearence benieath it to allow the shifter to only go in one direction. Stock shifter is pushed down under the plate and rides along the edge up the ramp. The Bugpack style shifer uses a sliding pin system that does not care what direction you go. It merly pulls the pin in so the shifter has more side throw. I don't know whats different about yours. Are you using a lockout plate?
