Thanks for posting the pics and pointing out the reverse gears. They were the main reason I went with the 84 and later Vanagon trans. I have seen so many guys blowing the reverse in the nose cone trans that I would never use one. I have used the reverse in my 2500# car backwards up hill! |

one other thing i like about this trans is the shift forks are welded you dont have to ajust the forks and rev gear is in the nose not in the trans this trans seems to be alot simpler |

I've got one of these sitting on my workbench at work that i want to fix and build. What sort of special tools or info do i need? Is there a trans build manual available, etc. Thank You Tony |

Try Long Enterprises for a manual. As I recall they also sell rebuild vids. |

Whines VERY loudly in 3rd and 4th. When i drained fluid it had metal shavings in it. The one i have in the car works ok except it will pop out of fourth if you don,t rest your hand on the shifter. That would,nt be so bad except i drive mine on the street. I have a turbo i would like to install at some point on my ecotec so i would like to repair/upgrade the one i have out and add a superdiff. Thanks Tony |

sounds like 3,4 maine shaft bearing is going bad letting the gears meash two close as fore 4 gear it could a bad syco, shifter fork or a shifter rod bearing thats whats wrong with this trans. we are talking about a side shift right where the shifter is in the middle of the case not on the nose .if you can find a sideshift trans with the vin start with acw this trans has a factry superdiff |

Yeah there midshift vanogon trannys. I was looking for acw code trans when i bought these. Bought noisy one for 350 and second one for 500. Hows that for luck? Bought two and they both have problems. The second one has been great otherwise. 5 trips in the woods and 1000+ street miles this summer. I,m the kind that would rather learn and build myself. I NEED to know how things work and in the long run its cheaper to do it yourself and you know exactly what you have that way. I have access to many tools and i'm willing to buy the tools i need. I,ve already spent tool money on two trannys that are'nt right. |

i got a side shift tranny 5 speed, it has a 411 1st n a 233 2nd, but yeah reverse is massive, u aint gunna break it for sure. acw is the code of wut ratio it is gunna belike either a 4 diff or a 2 diff so watch out acw means 4 or 2 diff. u will never break a side shift, ive ran one for 4 years n put it through hell with the 38 in a half im turning. but yeah side shift is the way to go |

I have not been into a side shift any farther than installing a cromoly pinion nut and super diff. I have re-built plenty of nose shift bus transaxles. From what I understand, you dont need any special tool to do anything with a side shift other than a pinion nut socket (wich it looks like you already have). Unlike a nose shift tranny, the shift points are not adjustable, so there is no need for a jig. You just take it apart, replace parts and put it back together. Thats what weddle told me anyway. |
