Ok. I know i have to upgrade and i've decided to find a side shift trans. Will my cv flanges (930s) from my three rib work on the vanagon side shift? How much are the linkages from Drews and turbo blue? Does anyone offer a cable shift and if so who and how much? I like Griffins cable setup and may try to replicate it.

You need to find a water cooled side shift to add any reverse strength value to your buggy.
Air cooled have nearly the same internals as a regular end shift 6 rib.
Couple different R&P on the water cooled too.
Look here for the code that tell what it is.

http://volksweb.relitech.com/helmut/GEA ... atertranny

An ACW code tranny would be a nice score.
Factory 4 spider diff in that one.

Vanagon and 091 6 rib have the same size drive splines.
Your 3 rib splines are smaller so the 930 3 rib CV flanges will not work on a Vanagon.

I sell that linkage you speak of.
$260 shipped.

Looks like this:

Her is the rest of it installed.

Does take a standard shift rod but you have to raise the shift box.
Also you need install a pillow block bearing back near the shift mechanism.

the 6 rib has a beefier cross shaft able to handle Pressure plate upgrades, just add some weld to the forks but be prepared to spend more for a starter unless you mill about a quarter inch off for a 3 rib starter,,,if you use a 3 rib bell housing you may need to upgrade the cross shaft for heavier pressure plate.

i'm sure that they are out there for less but i almost bought a 3 rib for 400 last week and the 6 rib has never been in a buggy..... anyone know why they say that you'll ride wheelies with a 6 rib?

the guy i'll be buying from says its the heaviest tranny vw made.. wouldnt most of this weight be in front of the rear tires so there for countering the extra weight since all the weight isnt behinf the tires and not like it is adding anything to the weight of the motor... only concern is i only running 98" wheelbase but plan on getting either 2x3 or 3x3 TA's..

if your not riding wheelies with a 3 rib i highly doubt you woould be riding wheelies with a 6 rib.....your weight distribution is whats gunna cause the front end to be light

The weight is not an issue,,,he probably meant heavy duty. The water cooled vanagon trannys are the strongest in stock form. It is considered a "mid-shift". Wheelies is a power to balance issue. I did wheelies in my buggy when it had a sedan tranny,,short wheel base,,,and water cooled engine. All VW trannys are good for some purpose. I ran a 3 rib fine till I broke the 80 horse power range,,and stock 091 till I broke the 140 horse power range and big tires. Buy it if you got the money to spare. They can be had for less.

Where is the code on the side (mid) shift vanagon trans?
Is it on the same side as the shifter but just below it and in front of the cv?
