Is anyone using Wilwood brakes or the knock off's? I was going to try a set of the knock off"s if they was just as good. Thanks MIKE

I run the knock-offs, and they are killer, in my opinion. You wouldnt believe the difference between them and OEM calipers. I've had Ghia(junk), Rabbit (better), and Sentra (not too bad) , and there is no comparison to the wilwood type. Cutting brakes react faster too and with less pressure applied to the handle. Get the knock-offs bled out good and if your other components are good, you shouldn't have to move your handle more than a couple inches to get full lockdown, and no fade at all. I've never ran the real ones, but I cant imagine them being any better. I dont see the need for any more "pinch power" on a conventional buggy.

I run the real one's, got them from a buddy who's a dealer, they were like $105 a piece. If the knock off's work, go for it though. I didn't know about them when I bought mine. I just knew the junk 'varga' one's I've broke 3 times are around $60 a piece and the extra $45 was well worth it to me!

Hey Bill, thats a sleek lookin' buggy in you avatar. The ORIGINAL buggy.

I dont even know what brand my knock-offs are, but they were $89 each at southern-buggys. I prolly would've give $15 each more for the wilwood brand if I'dve known they were that close in price! BUT, they have served me well , and I bent a sprint car style rim adapter in against one, the bolts scraped about 3/16" of aluminum off of it and it didnt break, still works like new!

I'd say Wilwood or knock-off either one, you'll be impressed!

wilwood billet dynalite 380 calipers- part # wil-120-4993 with
4" polymatrix pad- part # wil-15d-4331
i like to deal with mark at mckenzies (714-441-1212) he's always helpful.
this stuff is a bit pricy(calipers 143.00ea. pads 14.00ea.) but if it's in your budget go for it. otherwise the knockoff stuff is gonna do the job. (i'm a sucker for overkill)

Aren't the Wilwoods made from some kind of composite material? Several years ago I have friends who were using them and had the inserts pull out of them causing them to crash. Hopefully they are not like that anymore.

That would be a lot better, imo. I have been running the Nissans for years with no problems. VERY little travel in either the foot or steering brake handle. Very little effort to lock the tires. (my buggy is light and that helps too). The ceramic pads work a lot better too.

I have always run the Nissans and so does most of everyone else I ride with. They are the best as far as stopping power. I do not like the fact that you can have a pad fall out if the pads get too much worn; I have a friend in KY., which lost a pad out of one side on a bad hill and had a very bad crash. He no longer rides buggys any more because of it. On my single seater I put the wilwoods knock offs on it and they SUCK as compared to the Nissans. The brakes are spongy. (Compared to the Nissans) It does take some getting used to. But the pads will not fall out!!!!! So I guess I will keep them.

Bruce, did you use a power bleeder on those knock-offs, and rotate them to where the bleeder valve was the highest point while bleeding?? (I'm sure you or Chuck one would've already thought of that, just checking). When I went from Sentras to the knock offs, I loved them. Excellent pedal, no more than 1 1/2" of throw on the cutters, too.

Did you machine your rear rotors super thin?
Willies got the same knock-offs, with real thin rear rotors, and said my brakes were the best he's ever seen on a buggy. But I only cut my rotors to a little over 1/4" thick, his probably aint much thicker than 1/8". Dont know why that would matter, but maybe it does. You'd think as long as the pads were thick enough, and the pistons had enough travel in them, that rotor thickness would not matter once it was bled out good :?:.

we have tried everything. Tim has even bled them. and they are still a little spongy. But I will keep them they seem safer, since the pads will not fall out.

How long are your rear flex hoses? Sometimes if they are really long, this will cause a bit of sponge to the feel of things.

Post subject:

Another note on the flex lines is if there rubber and old they tend to baloon under pressure making your brakes spongy.

hard lines all the way.

Bruce Whats your M/C bore? Do you have a residual valve in it? If not try a 2#Wilwood 260-3278 I fixed a bunch that way.
