was wondering how complicated it would be to change from vw drum brakes to disc brakes on back of buggy?

not very difficult at all. If you running type 1 stub axle splines and 4 lug W pattern rims, you can get "Porsche style" 1 pc. rotors for around $55-$60 each that will bolt right on. Then you can run any number of calipers on them. Early 80's to mid '90s Nissan Sentra front calipers work really well, are easy to mount, and are cheap. Or Karman Ghia , a little pricier, and not as good, IMO. OR Wilwoods, by far the best I've used, but even more pricey. You can get Wilwood knock offs from Southern Buggies for about $89 each, plus pads. They work awesome. There are plenty of other OEM calipers that would work as well, VW and otherwise. If you use the "Porshe style" 1 pc rotors , be sure to get a caliper designed to run on single thickness rotor, not one for the wide rotors like on the front of a domestic RWD vehicle, that have the space between them. You will have to center your caliper over the rotors, and weld on some caliper mounts, whichever of these calipers you choose. I'd try to work it out so the rotors are on top of the arms, most protected spot.

If you are running 5 lug VW wheels, I know there are lots of aftermarket rotor options and complete kits , but I'm not too familiar with them. I think they are quite a bit more expensive from what I've heard, but I think they have some pretty nice kits that have a "bolt on" caliper mount.

What year and model Porsche do I use to get the correct 4 lug rotor?

I think they are called that because they are Porsche "style" rotors.
I and most other shops keep those in stock for about what Larry quoted.

I bought a Karman Ghia rear disc brake kit for my new car, it was 200 dollars. Comes with two rotors, seals, Caliper mounting brackets, and loaded calipers. I didn't think it was a bad deal, my old JFZ calipers had a cracked piston, needed new o rings and pads, oh and my rotors were shot. ha. If you want a simple bolt on disk brake kit that is relatively inexpensive i would pick up the Karman Ghia kit, i believe it is actually made by empi...

i ran that setup for years & it worked good. the only drawback was you had to realy had to stand on the break or pull supper hard on the sterring breaks to get the tires to lock up.

You can take a rear rotor from a 74 porshe 911 and cut the drum to make a drive hub. Thats what i ran for years, oh ya the calipers were from a nissan sentra and the new buggy has subaru rear calipers, work real good.

I'm doing fine with my stock single piston buggy master cylinder,,,,and stock pedals,,,,,for now :mrgreen:
