my buggy has a set of one piece rear rotors and one has stripped the splines out i was told they were bought at auto zone and they come off a porsche? idk and would like to see if anyone knew anything about it

As far as I know the Porsche rotors were a two piece, a drive hub and a rotor hat. Sounds like a cheap china made one piece rotor. Is there a spacer between the rotor and the axle nut? If so that's what it is.

the axle nut does not sit flat against the rotor it has a shank on it about two inches thick

porshe rotors are most all 5 lug patterns also

914 was a four bolt, I have a type 3 drive hub that was made to fit inside the Porsche 914 rotor, works rather well. Added; get us a photo, we are shooting in the dark now.

Quite a few years back they was a disc brake kit that had solid rotors and was like a hundred bucks cheaper than the next competitors price.can't remember who made them but I know they were extremely heavy.I bought a set at bug stuff but this was years ago,but I'm sure you could still get them but I'd go with the two piece and save on the weight issue myself.don't know what all years but the 924 was also 4 bolt.Chad :mrgreen:

Any buggy shop has them. China made one piece rotor. Good luck, have heard of a bunch of them failing the same way.

Locate 2 type 3 drive hubs, the outside diameter needs turned down to fit into the Porsche rotor hat works real nice.

my first buggy originally had the 2 piece rear brake porsche rotor setup and i once stripped the inner splines dues to the axel nut getting loose, we bolted on a stock type 1 drum and jacked both wheels up of the ground and cranked the buggy and put it in 2nd gear and a bungy chord on the other cutting brake and took a side grinder with a cutooff wheel and then held it to the front face of the drum at the same distance from the lug holes as my old one and it looked like a machine shop did it when we got through, kind of a redneck way but it worked fine for us

I am sure that I'm NOT sure. You will need to do some checking, but some how I seem to remember 1972-76 914 Porsche. Double check this!!

Make sure you tighten them with the little tool that ya smack with a BFH . Ive been running the same rotors for 3-4yrs no problems.

Its the five lug rotor hubs that I have seen break like that alot. the inner surface that tightens against the spacer tends to break and then its not flat anymore leading to a wobbley disk and crappy brakes. Most of the 4 lug ones are much thicker right there.

What happens is the rotor is made of cast iron, cheap brittle cast iron, If the axle bolt isn't tight enough the fit loosens up between the stub axle and the rotor. The cast iron can't take any amount of hammering and it will eventually fail. The type 3 drive hub is a forged heat treated steel piece, real hard to hurt it. I have seen four or five 4 bolt rotors fail here at Wellsville, Guys think they broke a cv or ring and pinion until someone sees the axle turning and not the wheel. Just like anything else you get what you pay for, garbage in garbage out.
